MST 2003 Special sessions This year's MST includes the following special sessions. Student Technology Showcase Interested in integrating technology into the curriculum? Then come to the student technology showcase and see what has been done in our own area with equipment that is found in our classrooms. Here is description of one of last year's exhibits: "Using their fascination of and familiarity with roller coasters, the students of Rio Bravo-Greeley have designed a physical science lesson around the amusement park attractions. The students will present a lesson they designed that introduces the concepts of velocity, acceleration, gravity, friction, and conservation of energy and relates them to the presentation that incorporates video footage of actual rides and models, information that the students acquired via the Internet, and links to related web sites." Come see this year's presentations at the Multipurpose Room (MPR) in the Student Union from 8:30 until 1:30 on Saturday. For further information contact Carol Lombardo at calombardo@kern.org. Building a Presence for Science The MST is happy to be the site for one of the first "CABAP" sessions in the area. This new national level program will attempt to link contact people ("points of contact") at every school site together for national- and state-level action over an electronic network. This session will begin at 2 PM in the Student Union MPR. For more information contact Heather Randolph at hedteach@msn.com CTAP help sessions A number of CTAP presentations are included in this year's MST Saturday sessions, including three sessions supervised by Jim Ross and three by Corey Osvog (their names will appear as authors or coauthors in the List of Talks) plus other submitted talks. Look over the List of Talks to find them all. Rumors and Other Sound Bytes for Teaching Science: This session is presented by the famous H3 team: Hanley, Hopkins, and Hughes. The mathematician/magician/scientist/teacher/demonstrator team will perform and involve the audience in a number of demonstrations centering around the physics of sound. STAT TNT Make-and-take "Boxful" sessions This set of ( all five) Saturday sessions in room 128 Education building is sponsored by the STAT TNT group, funded by a Teaching with New Technologies grant. The activities involve things in boxes that are investigated by students. Four of the five investigations MAY be used to introduce basic statistical concepts like average, plotting data as bar charts, and more sophisticated concepts like expected outcome distributions, deviations, etc. The first 20 attendees in each session will receive a complete set of materials for ALL FIVE activities--That's a total of 100 sets of free stuff! |
