Featured Speaker: Abel Pedro

abelpedroAbel Pedro is an outstanding undergraduate in CSUB's Art program; he will graduate in June with his B.A. in Art.  He works in clay--and license plates!  Mr. Pedro has studied in Florence, Italy where he concentrated on figurative painting.  He is a mentor at East High where he also coaches soccer.  His interest in education will bring him to the MST conference to present two sessions, Polygon Posters and Symmetrical Thrones:

Polygon posters is for young elementary students.  Students make posters from painted, polygon-shaped cardboard pieces.  By uniting the shapes in artwork, the students have multiple opportunities to anchor their memory of the shapes and their names.  The final product is an attractive, durable work of art.  The student can be proud to show the work and recall its manufacture, along with the names of the shapes included in the poster.

Symmetrical thrones is a presentation for elementary and middle school teachers.  The work is based on a massive work of "found art" made privately and discovered only after the artist's death.  Attendees will hear about the original artist, see his massive, bilaterally symmetric "throne" constructed of cardboard, aluminum foil, and other "found" objects.  Attendees will learn how to help their students make smaller, personal but still very artistic symmetrical thrones.
