Tim Vivian:
Congratulations to Professor of Religious Studies Tim Vivian on the recent publication of
Counsels on the Spiritual Life: Mark the Monk by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press. In
preparing this translation, Dr. Vivian worked with Dr. Augustine Casiday from the University of
Wales at Lampeter. The writings of Mark, a fifth century monk in Asia Minor, are deeply valued
for their theological insight and historical interest.

The first annual Stafford Betty Scholarship for Excellence in Religious Studies was inaugurated
this academic year. It is a full-ride scholarship, usually intended for a single student to cover
tuition and fees for the entire year. Minimum qualification is a GPA of 3.5, both overall and in
the major. This year there are three equally qualified Religious Studies majors (with very high
GPAs), so the funding was parceled out in three equal awards. Mandy Wallace will be funded for
the fall quarter, Roy Snyder for the winter, and Matthew Fillhart for the spring. Congratulations
to each of them!
Philosophy major Palmira Hernandez was a finalist for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute
Scholarship and has received an award of $2,500, which will be paid for three years.
