Elementary Education: Multiple Subject Credential Program

The Multiple Subject Credential program is a professional teacher preparation program in which we prepare aspiring educators to earn their preliminary California teaching credential. This pathway is designed for individuals who desire to be elementary school teachers.

About Our Program

Our 50–52-unit post-baccalaureate program introduces essential knowledge, skills and practical experience to succeed in the classroom. The program is typically completed over three or four full-time semesters. A teacher residency option may be available depending on the campus. 

The courses are offered primarily in-person in the early evening. The program courses are:

EDTE 3308 - Sociocultural Foundations in Education
EDTE 4100 - Teaching English Language Learners and Special Populations
EDTE 4200 - Technology for Educators

Application and Admission Guidelines

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application process can be summarized in three steps:

    1. Join the University Family
    2. Lay Your Foundation
    3. Apply to the program

Whether you’re at our Bakersfield or Antelope Valley campus, we hope this application roadmap will guide you in achieving your education goal.

Please carefully review the application instructions and take advantage of the available student resources to support you throughout the application journey.

Statement to Applicants

Licensure/Credentialing Disclosure

California State University, Bakersfield is committed to equal opportunity for students. Applicants seeking admission to the Multiple Subject teacher credentialing programs must meet specific admission requirements as set forth by the University and by the Teaching Credential Programs. These requirements are separate processes with separate requirements that must be met the Applicant for admission consideration. Failure to follow the application process may lead to rejection or denial of an application.

To aid Applicants in understanding the Application Process an information video/session has been provided as well as detailed instructions. An application must include all the required documents to be considered for program admission and meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee a program interview or admission to a credential program. Admission decisions are made by the Teaching Credentialing Programs and are final.  If admitted to a credential program it does not guarantee a recommendation for a preliminary credential. 

Licensure/Credentialing Disclosure:

Admission into programs leading to licensure and credentialing does not guarantee that students will obtain a license or credential. Licensure and credentialing requirements are set by agencies that are not controlled by or affiliated with the CSU and requirements can change at any time. For example, licensure or credentialing requirements can include evidence of the right to work in the United States (e.g., social security number or tax payer identification number) or successfully passing a criminal background check. Students are responsible for determining whether they can meet licensure or credentialing requirements. The CSU will not refund tuition, fees, or any associated costs, to students who determine subsequent to admission that they cannot meet licensure or credentialing requirements. Information concerning licensure and credentialing requirements are available from the Credential Analyst at credentialanalyst@csub.edu.

The California State University has not determined whether its programs meet other states' educational or professional requirements for licensure and certification. Students enrolled in a California State University program who are planning to pursue licensure or certification in other states are responsible for determining whether they will meet their state's requirements for licensure or certification. This disclosure is made pursuant to 34 CFR §668.43(a)(5)(v)(C).

Step 1: Join the University Family

To be eligible you need:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
  • Be in good standing from your previous institution
  • Minimum GPA of 2.50 or higher
  • Meet the professional, personal, scholastic, and other standards for graduate study, including qualifying examinations, as appropriate campus authorities might prescribe
How to apply:
  1. Submit your graduate application via Cal State Apply, www.calstate.edu/apply/graduate.
  2. Pay the $70.00 nonrefundable application fee.
  3. Send one official transcripts to the Office of Graduate Admissions from every college/university you have attended (Note: Current CSUB students/Alumni do not need to send transcripts unless they have attended another university since attending CSUB).

    If you need to mail official transcripts, send them to:

    If you are graduating from your bachelor’s program and your degree is not posted at the time of sending your transcripts, you will need to send another transcript from the institution granting your bachelors degree with the degree posted on your transcript.

    International Transcripts:

    ***Any transcript from a college/university outside of the USA will require a course by course analysis. For a list of institutions approved by CSU Bakersfield and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to perform a course by course evaluation review: International Transcript Evaluation***

University Application Acknowledgement and Evaluation

After your Cal State Apply application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from Cal State Apply indicating the receipt of your application. Within a few weeks, you should receive an acknowledgment e-mail from CSUB which will provide you with your CSUB ID number and information to log on to the one-stop student portal called myCSUB. This information is sent to the e-mail address you provided on your application so it is very important that the e-mail address you provided is current.

Upon receipt of all necessary documents, a review of your eligiblity based on university requirements will be completed. A decision letter will be sent upon the completion of your review. The status of your application will be reflected in myCSUB. Be sure to monitor your "To-Do" list regularly there may be additional documents or requirements you will need to submit.

If admitted, students should familiarize themselves with the university registration policies.

Step 2: Lay Your Foundation

Program Prerequisites/Course Substitution Requests

Prior to being eligible to apply to the program, you must have completed, be in progress, or received an approved course substitution for the one of the prerequisites for the program.
  • Courses must be passed with a grade of  "C" or better, or "CR" (Credit). "C-" is not an acceptable "C" grade for the credential program.
Upon receiving admission to the university, please register for the early field experience and foundation courses if not previously completed.

Please be advised:

  • If you have previously completed the early field experience or foundation courses within the last 5 years or received a course substitution for all the foundation courses within the last 5 years then please review step 3 - applying to the program.
  • If it has been over 5 years since you have taken any one of the foundation courses or early field experience course you may need to retake the courses as no course may be over 7 years old when applying for a preliminary credential. Please contact an admission advisor to inquire if you need to retake the foundation courses.


The prerequisite courses can be found under Teacher Prep on the Class Schedule. A link to directions on registering for courses can be found in the Student Resource section. The prerequisites are:

  • EDTE 3000 (Introduction to Teaching): Includes the required 45 hours of early field experience in a classroom.
    • A certificate of clearance, tuberculosis clearance, and mandated reporter traning certificate are required for this course. Documents should be provided no later than the second week of class. For information on the required documents please refer to the Credential Office: Student Resource page and look under each document name.

    • An experienced-based waiver for the EDTE 3000 course is available. Form:

  • EDTE 3308, EDTE 4100, and EDTE 4200
Course Substitutions:
Please note that courses accepted for undergraduate/graduate studies do not count for the credential program. The credential program must complete a course evaluation in order to determine if the course is acceptable for the credential program.

Step 3a: Apply to the Program - Required Documents

Eligibility and Supporting Documents to Apply to the Program

To be considered for program admission the following requirements must be met. Applicants who fully meet all requirements receive priority consideration. “Fully meet” means there are no outstanding or remedial issues. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee program admission.

Eligibility Requirements to Apply for the Program:

  1. Obtain admission to the university as a post-baccalaureate student
  2. Hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution 
  3. Minimum GPA of 2.75 in last 60 semester or 90 quarter units
  4. Successfully met Early Fieldwork Experience (course or waiver)
  5. Successfully completed foundation courses or currently in progress of courses

  • Applicants should apply as early as possible, as the program is competitive and applicants will be only be considered on a program availability basis.
  • A complete program application and supporting documents must be received by the program deadline to be considered for admission.

Please carefully read and complete the program application. The program application will require that you attach your supporting documents to the application.

CREDENTIAL SERVICE REQUEST
A $30.00 nonrefundable application fee must be submitted with your application to the credential program. Applicants should submit the receipt for this fee with their application. Applications will not be reviewed without the payment of this fee.

CTC requires payment separate to this CSUB fee. An additional credential service fee will be required if applying to become an intern or change of program. CTC will also require additional fees.

RECOMMENDATION
Applicants will list two individuals names and emails in the program application. The Recommender will be notified of the request and asked to complete a recommendation form. The recommendation form should be completed by an individual in a position to evaluate your professional dispositions such as a supervisor, or previous/current instructor. A relative may not make a recommendation.

BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENT
Verification of basic skills:
• Holding a bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution. Please submit a copy of your unofficial transcript where you received your bachelor's degree.

SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCY
Verification of subject matter by completing one of the subject matter options:

CSUB verification of:

  • Degree major
  • Degree content areas (coursework lite option)
  • Coursework verification
  • Coursework/exam verification 
Subject matter waiver
  • A letter of subject matter waiver from a Commission approved subject matter preparation program.
Passage of exam
  • Multiple Subject CSETs
Evidence of progressing towards meeting subject matter
  • CSUB verification of subject matter not met:
    • Degree major not met or aligned
    • Degree content areas or coursework verification 
  • Attempted Multiple Subject CSET results
  • Proof of registration of Multiple Subject CSETs

  • If an applicant, is admitted without 100% subject matter, full subject matter must be met prior to being eligible to complete final clinical practice.

Submit your CSUB subject matter verification, exam results, subject matter waiver letter, or proof of progression towards subject matter with your application.

CHARACTER CLEARANCE
Applicants must provide verification of having met the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) fingerprint character and identification process and the moral and professional fitness standards that CTC requires which meets the established California law standards. Verification can be met by providing a current and valid document issued by CTC.

TUBERCULOSIS (TB) CLEARANCE
Applicants must provide a copy of a valid TB clearance. Acceptable documents:
  • Negative Skin Test (within 4 years of test date)
  • Negative X-ray or Blood Test (within 2 years of test date)
  • Risk Assessment (within 4 years of assessment date).
    • Risk assessments must have a valid medical professional’s signature/stamp and be on a valid CTCA questionnaire form or medical office letterhead.

MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING CERTIFICATE
Applicants must submit verification of completing a Mandated Reporter Training for School Personnel. A certificate of the training must be submitted with your application. A valid certificate is less than one year old. A small fee of $9.00 may be required to obtain your certificate.

Please note: If admitted to a credential program and your certificate expires before the end of the semester you will be required to complete a new training and receive a certificate before the start of the semester as part of clinical practice clearance.

LETTER OF GOOD STANDING – ONLY IF YOU PREVIOUSLY ATTENDED A CREDENTIAL PROGRAM
A letter of good standing is needed if you previously were attending another institution's credential program as an admitted credential candidate. You must submit a letter of good standing from your previous credential program with your CSUB Multiple Subject program application.

EXCEPTIONAL ADMISSION REQUEST - APPLICANTS WHOSE GPA DOES NOT MEET THE PROGRAM REQUIREMENT
An applicant may request an Exceptional Admission Request for GPA that is below the 2.75 program rerquirement. However, these requests are only conisdered on a program availability basis and the program is competitive. If you would like to have your application considered for an Exceptional Admission, please contact your Admission Advisor.

Coming Soon! CSUB will have a new program application process for Spring 2027. There will be separate processes for the Bakersfield and Antelope Valley Campuses.

After You Submit Your Application

Once your application has been reviewed you will recieve an email regarding your application (Please be patient as the review process can take several weeks). Only complete applications that were received by the program deadline and program availability will be contacted to schedule a program interview.  

Program Interview

If you're contacted to complete an interview it will be conducted as a group and panel interview by program faculty. Please respond as soon as possible to  schedule and confirm your interview. 

After the Program Interview

Applicants are not provided information on the status of their interview so please do not ask. Your application will be reviewed by the Credential Admission Committee. You will be notified via your CSUB email of the outcome of your application. Please note, all decisions of the Committee are final.
