The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Welcome to CSU Bakersfield!  This year, we embark on a year focused on “Inspiring Excellence, Transforming Lives.”

CSUB is excellence.

Washington Monthly ranked us in the top 10 universities for master’s degree programs, having shot up from 87th in 2015.

CSUB transforms lives.

In a Stanford research study, CSUB ranked number 3 in the country for the upward mobility of students.  Nearly 81 percent of CSUB students moved from the bottom fifth of income distribution to the top three-fifths.

CSUB is excellence.

Two of our programs were recognized this past year as we received official notification that our Public Policy and Administration program was reaccredited by NASPAA and the Board of Registered Nursing awarded Continuing Approval to the Nursing Department.

CSUB transforms lives.

More and more students are seeking CSUB as they pursue their educational goals.  In the past seven years, applications to CSUB have increased 65% from 9,500 in 2010 to 15,700 in 2017.  Last year we awarded our highest number of degrees as 2500 graduates crossed the commencement stage.  We continue to focus on the Graduation Initiative on Student Success as we remove barriers for student progress to the degree.

CSUB is excellence.

This year, we open the long-awaited Humanities Office and Classroom Complex, which replaces the Faculty Tower.  As the fall semester began, 56 faculty and staff moved into offices and the three large classrooms will be ready for spring semester classes.  We welcome 28 new full-time faculty and will search for 39 more during this academic year.

CSUB transforms lives.

Our faculty create research opportunities for our students to learn first-hand how intellectual curiosity is explored to expand knowledge.  Our faculty secured more than $14 million in research grant funding in 2016-17, up from $13 million in 2015-16.  CSUB is a leader in STEM research in the CSU system.  While we are 19 out of 23 in student size among the CSU’s, we are fourth in STEM research grant dollars.  Nearly all of these grants include undergraduate and graduate students in the research.

CSUB is excellence.

This year, we will establish a Faculty Hall of Fame to recognize outstanding faculty who have contributed so much over the years to our students, the university, and intellectual inquiry.  We will celebrate a Book Launch for all faculty and staff who have authored books.

CSUB transforms lives.

This year, we will develop a strategic plan for CSUB Antelope Valley as we explore how to improve and expand educational programs in our larger region.  We are launching a 4-year pledge and 15-to-Finish campaigns to encourage students to stay on target to graduate.

CSUB is excellence.

CSUB established a Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars.  In the inaugural participation in the national conference, a CSUB faculty, staff, and student each won awards for their presentations.

CSUB transforms lives.

We established a Center for Global Outreach to develop international programs for our faculty and students.  In just two years, our international student population has grown from 60 students to more than 250 students from 40 different countries.  Study abroad opportunities are expanding as our students strive to learn more about the larger world and integrate their knowledge and experiences in diverse environments.

Inspiring Excellence, Transforming Lives.

It is a great time to be a Roadrunner!
