More About Sade Haake
Sade graduated from CSUB in 2016 with a BS in Geological Sciences and in 2020 with MS in Geological Sciences. He currently works at California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), the oversight agency of oil, gas, and geothermal industries.
Kerry Klein
Kerry Klein

Reporter

More About Kerry Klein
Kerry Klein is an award-winning reporter whose coverage of public health, air pollution, drinking water access and wildfires in the San Joaquin Valley has been featured on NPR, KQED, Science Friday and Kaiser Health News. Her podcast Escape From Mammoth Pool, about a high-stakes rescue from the 2020 Creek Fire, was named a podcast “listeners couldn’t get enough of" by the NPR One app.

Kerry is also a recovering geologist. After growing up near Boston, she graduated from McGill University with a B.Sc. in geology. When she began working as an exploration geologist and geothermal energy analyst, radio reporting was a distant and unlikely future. But she found new significance in media while hosting a talk show about science at a Montreal public radio station and later while producing a podcast for Science Magazine. She then returned to school to study science journalism at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

When she’s not in front of a computer or microphone, Kerry can be found biking to the rock climbing gym, practicing her violin, sewing unnecessary but very cute articles of clothing, or wandering the Sierra foothills with her husband and two children.
Matthew Van Grinsven
Matthew Van Grinsven

Senior Oil and Gas Engineer, California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM)

More About Matthew Van Grinsven
Matthew Van Grinsven holds a Master of Science in Petroleum Geology from California State University, Bakersfield, and a Bachelor of Science in Honors Geology from California State University, Northridge. He also earned Associate degrees in Biological and Physical Science and Mathematics from the College of the Canyons. Matthew has ten years of experience with the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM), where he has served as a Field Inspector/Engineering Geologist, Associate Oil and Gas Engineer, and now as a Senior Oil and Gas Engineer leading a team of geologists and engineers in the review of Underground Injection Control projects. His expertise includes well testing, rulemaking, aquifer exemption analysis, and well permitting, supporting California’s commitment to safe and environmentally responsible energy development. Before joining CalGEM, he was a Petroleum Geology Intern at Chevron, contributing to property modeling and reservoir mapping for the Tulare Heavy Oil Reservoir Team. During his graduate studies, he also taught Geology, Biology, and Earth Science as a long-term substitute teacher for the Kern High School District and served as a lecturer and teaching assistant in the Geology Department at CSUB.
