Acting Dean's Message Spring 2024
Welcome to the Spring Semester, 2024!
Spring an exciting time, with many students preparing to graduate, achieving the goal toward which they have worked for years. Earning a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Master of Arts degree is an important accomplishment, and a cause for celebration.
Some graduates will continue their education by enrolling in a post-baccalaureate program at the university, while others will begin their chosen careers. All will join the ranks of the university’s growing number of alumni who contribute to our community. Many alumni will maintain the ties to CSUB that they forged as students, perhaps by attending some of the many events hosted by the university, by becoming active in the alumni association, or by becoming patrons of the School of Arts and Humanities, supporting subsequent generations of students on their academic journeys.
This spring, I hope you will join others in our campus community and take part in some of the numerous opportunities to enjoy events that students, faculty, and staff devote their time and talent to prepare and present. Being an engaged member of the School of Arts and Humanities allows you to appreciate the hard work of those who are part of A&H, and to share in the pride of being part of the ‘Runner community.
Included among this spring’s Arts and Humanities events are performances of The River
Bride, on March 7, 8, and 9. Based on Brazilian folklore, this play, written by Marisela
Treviño Orta, and directed by CSUB’s Mandy Rees, tells the tale of love, regret, and
two sisters who struggle to be true to their hearts. The following week, on March
12, the Kegley Institute of Ethics welcomes Rebecca Nagle as its 37th Charles W. Kegley
Memorial Lecture speaker. Nagle, a journalist and a member of the Cherokee Nation,
who hosts the podcast, This Land, will present “Changing the Narrative: Native/Indigenous
Representation in the News Media.” On May 2, the CSUB Chamber Singers will perform
music from around the world, spanning from the Renaissance to the 21st century.
For the full schedule of Arts and Humanities sponsored events, please see our calendar

As always, our outstanding faculty strive to provide students with immersive experiences outside of the classroom. In February, Theatre faculty Professors Mendy McMasters and Amy Ressler, will accompany seven students to the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival, being held in Glendale, California. The students were nominated to participate, based on evaluation of their work at CSUB. Experiences such as these not only have a powerful impact on students’ education, but also shape the memories of their time at CSUB.
Thank you for your involvement with the School of Arts and Humanities, and for your generous support. Your donations make a significant impact of the range of programs and quality of education available to our students. I wish each of you a wonderful semester.
