Beyond The Classroom

Arts and Humanities in Action!

Beyond the Classroom: Arts and Humanities in Action! enhances students’ experiences outside of the classroom by promoting engagement among students and faculty, advancing cross-cultural appreciation with the arts and the humanities while visiting one of the world’s premier cultural centers, and helping foster a sense of belonging and connection to the university community.

David Melendez is Assistant Professor of Theatre History and Dramatic Literature at California State University, Bakersfield. His research focuses on theatrical representations of the California Missions and modes of performance that respond to the California Mission past. At CSUB he has directed the following productions: Country House (W małym dworku), The Courage to Right a Woman's Wrongs (Valor, agravio y mujer), and The Last Croissant.

Joe Ren is a multimedia artist, designer, and educator. He is an assistant professor in Digital Media at California State University Bakersfield. He is also a co-founder / chief designer at Expose Art and a rotating-term vice-chair of the Executive Committee at the Association of Chinese Artists in American Academia (ACAAA). For the past few years, he has exhibited his works nationally and internationally in America, Sweden, Finland, South Korea, and China. His research and articles have been published in China, England, and America such as, Fusion + Evolution - Teaching and Learning of Design, New Media Art, International Academic Forum on Individualized Education of Art and Design in International Field of Vision, Chinese Literature Today, etc.

Hello, I am Annabelle Sanchez, an academic advisor for the Arts & Humanities Student Center. I started advising for AH Student starting June 2024 and have been advising for a total of 2 years. I enjoy helping students navigate their college career and am thrilled to attend the beyond the classroom event to better connect with students and explore the Getty museum.

More About Dan Stockwell
Dan Stockwell was a high school English language arts teacher for eight years in South Carolina before becoming an assistant professor of English Education at CSUB. Dan is one of the faculty advisors of English Club and is always happy to engage with students in and beyond the classroom. This is his second year at CSUB. In addition to teaching, Dan loves walking his dog with his spouse.
The Getty trip was a great incentive for both faculty and staff. Transportation was excellent, and snacks and incentives were appreciated as well as lunch. I can tell even the students who were on the 'quiet' side appreciated the trip as well.

Interim Dean of Arts and Humanities at CSUB

Alicia Rodriquez

DR. ALICIA RODRIQUEZ

Interim Dean of Arts and Humanities

Prior to her appointment as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Dr. Alicia E. Rodriquez taught in the Department of History, where began her tenure-track career in 1998, after teaching for CSU Northridge the previous academic year. She also served as the coordinator for the Social Science Program, as the faculty director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, and was a member of the Academic Senate. Dr. Rodriquez, a Bakersfield native, is an alumna of CSU Bakersfield, and is a first-generation college graduate. She earned her M.A. and her Ph.D. in History, at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Rodriquez looks forward to serving students, faculty, and staff in the College of Arts and Humanities, to advancing the mission of the College of Arts and Humanities and its programs, and to helping foster greater connections between AH and the broader community.
