Arts and Humanities in Action!

Beyond the Classroom: Arts and Humanities in Action! enhances students’ experiences outside of the classroom by promoting engagement among students and faculty, advancing cross-cultural appreciation with the arts and the humanities while visiting one of the world’s premier cultural centers, and helping foster a sense of belonging and connection to the university community.

Flyer for “Travel Beyond the Classroom: The Getty Center – Los Angeles, CA” on October 24, 2026. The flyer features photos of students at the Getty Center and riding a bus, and invites students to register and reserve a seat. Transportation, admission, lunch, and prizes are included. A QR code links to the Beyond the Classroom registration and information page. Arts and Humanities majors receive priority; students in other majors may be wait-listed. Participants must be enrolled in Fall 2026.

Itinerary

Itinerary for “Beyond the Classroom: Arts and Humanities in Action” at the Getty Center in Los Angeles on October 24, 2026. The schedule includes student check-in and breakfast at 6:30 a.m., group meetings and bus departure from CSUB at 8:00 a.m., arrival at the Getty at 10:00 a.m., gallery and exhibition exploration, a roundtable discussion, lunch, free time, and departure at 4:00 p.m., with arrival back at CSUB scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The graphic includes California State University, Bakersfield and College of Arts and Humanities branding.
I was able to see first-hand how the arts/humanities is critical for human wonder and inspiration, and consequently, society.

Shivansh Awasthi is an Assistant Professor of Game Design and Interactive Media at CSUB. His teaching and creative work focus on game design, 3D animation, and interactive experiences, and he enjoys finding connections between those areas and art, storytelling, and everyday media. Shivansh is always happy to talk with students about games, creative projects, and all the different kinds of games they enjoy playing or are interested in trying. This is his first year at CSUB, and he is excited to get to know more students and the campus community beyond the classroom.

More About Phil Chang
Phil Chang’s artworks appeared in the group exhibition, Nineteenth-Century Photography Now, at the Getty in 2024. Chang’s artworks are in the public collections of the Getty Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The recipient of a 2025 Guggenheim Fellowship, Chang is an associate professor in the Department of Art & Art History at California State University, Bakersfield and a faculty member of the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts at Bard College.

More About Katy Lochary-Harl
Katy Lochary-Harl is a lecturer in Philosophy & Religious Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies and a proud CSUB alum. She especially loves getting students excited about religion, ethics, gender, sexuality, and all the wonderfully complicated questions that come with encountering them. She is particularly interested in the ways history, culture, belief, and identity intersect and in discovering unexpected connections between the past and the questions we are still asking today. Outside of teaching, Katy enjoys writing poetry, gardening, rock collecting, and spending time with her spouse, two kids, and their dog, Frito. 
Mandy Rees
Mandy ReesProfessor Emeritus of Theatre
More About Mandy Rees
Mandy Rees always enjoys introducing students to the world of the arts and guiding them to discover their own creativity. She is Professor Emeritus of Theatre, and has taught acting, directing and improvisation to numerous CSUB students. She has directed close to 70 productions, her most recent being Doubt, A Parable. Her scholarly pursuits have included the director/actor collaboration and the pedagogy of voice and speech. Her spare time is filled with music, cooking, and taking orders from her cat.

More About Dan Stockwell
Dan Stockwell was a high school English language arts teacher for eight years in South Carolina before becoming an assistant professor of English Education at CSUB. Dan is one of the faculty advisors of English Club and is always happy to engage with students in and beyond the classroom. This is his fourth year at CSUB. In addition to teaching, Dan loves walking his dogs with his spouse and playing board games.
The Getty trip was a great incentive for both faculty and staff. Transportation was excellent, and snacks and incentives were appreciated as well as lunch. I can tell even the students who were on the 'quiet' side appreciated the trip as well.

Alicia Rodriquez

DR. ALICIA RODRIQUEZ

Dean of Arts and Humanities

Prior to her appointment as Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, Dr. Alicia E. Rodriquez taught in the Department of History, where began her tenure-track career in 1998, after teaching for CSU Northridge the previous academic year. She also served as the coordinator for the Social Science Program, as the faculty director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program, and was a member of the Academic Senate. Dr. Rodriquez, a Bakersfield native, is an alumna of CSU Bakersfield, and is a first-generation college graduate. She earned her M.A. and her Ph.D. in History, at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dr. Rodriquez looks forward to serving students, faculty, and staff in the College of Arts and Humanities, to advancing the mission of the College of Arts and Humanities and its programs, and to helping foster greater connections between AH and the broader community.
