The Pre-RISE program is a series of workshops introducing freshmen and sophomores, in not only the target disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Kinesiology and Psychology but, for all students interested to learn about the biomedical and behavioral sciences.
The Pre-RISE program will
- Introduce students to the general field of the biomedical and behavioral sciences
- Highlight careers in the field
- Provide students the opportunity to meet and hear about research activity at CSUB
- Provide career counseling.
- Optional to the students will be to complete a series of on-line critical thinking modules that will serve to enhance their understanding of the scientific method and begin the process of thinking like a scientist. Completing the modules will increase the likelihood of entrance into the CSUB U-RISE program.
Students will receive invitations from the university in the Fall of each year with instructions to register for the program online. The only requirement to join the program is a commitment to attend the year-long series of workshops. There will be a series of 4 seminars during the year. In all the workshops a major emphasis will be placed on the lack of diversity in the biomedical fields and the importance that diversity plays in moving science forward. The workshops will be offered by the Director and faculty research mentors, and in some cases, invited speakers from each of the targeted disciplines.
Students are expected to complete the series of four workshops during the year and activities below:
Semester | Approximate Month | Title |
---|---|---|
Fall Workshop Series | September | "What is the CSUB U-RISE Program?" |
- | November | "What are the Biomedical and Behavioral Sciences?" |
Spring Workshop Series | February | "Careers in the Biomedical Sciences-Why the Field Needs You!" |
- | April | "CSUB Research in Biomedical Sciences" |
Lastly, students in the CSUB Pre-RISE program will have the opportunity to participate in career and academic advising group sessions to ensure that all Pre-RISE students are on track with their course work in their disciplines leading to on-time graduation.
