Cost to Study Abroad

Of all of the factors to consider when thinking about studying abroad, the actual cost of the program and how you'll pay for it should be high on your list. Not all costs are wrapped into the cost of a program. For example, airfare and meals are typically out-of-pocket costs, but not always. For some programs, financial aid is available – others, it's not.

Because each program is different and the available funding varies, we strongly recommend you meet with a study abroad advisor to discuss all of your options as well as develop a comprehensive and realistic budget to guide you during the decision-making process.

You should also be sure to consult with the CSUB Financial Aid office as early as possible to understand what aid might be available to you.

We've also compiled some Funding FAQs below for you to consider. If you have any additional questions, please contact us so we can answer questions relative to your specific situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you'll find a list of the most frequently asked questions from students regarding Study Abroad. If you can't find the answer you're looking for, please contact us.

What Is the FAFSA and Why Do I Need to Fill It Out?

The FAFSA – free application for federal student aid – is the application that kicks off the financial aid process and determines what grant, federal loans, or additional need-based financial aid might be available to you. Some Study Abroad programs are eligible for federal financial aid, others are not. However, you must complete the FAFSA to begin the process. More information is available in the Financial Aid section.

Are There Any Scholarships Available?

Yes! Check out our Scholarships Resources page for more detailed information.

How Much Financial Aid Will I Get for the Program?

This varies by program. For example, semester- and year-long programs charge your regular CSUB tuition. Your financial aid package, if awarded, would be based on your need relative to your FAFSA information. Please check with the CSUB Financial Aid office for more information or contact us.

Where Do I Go to View My Financial Aid Offer?

All financial aid awards are available in MyCSUB. Again, the study abroad office does not award financial aid and any questions regarding your eligibility or individual aid package should be directed to the CSUB Financial Aid office.
