Medical Spanish Minor

The Medical Spanish Minor offers students the opportunity to
develop the language skills and cultural awareness necessary for
working with Spanish-speaking individuals in healthcare and human
services settings. It complements a wide range of programs,
including:

• Nursing/Pre-Health
• Public Health
• Kinesiology
• Social Work
• Psychology
• Biology/Pre-Med

The minor is open to any student interested in conversational Spanish for health and human services.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop basic, intermediate and advanced Spanish medical
terminology, medical interpreting and translation skills.

  • Develop awareness of the critical intersections among language
proficiency, cultural dexterity, and the health and human services
professions, especially as related to Spanish-speaking patients
and their providers in the U.S.

  • Strengthen intercultural competence and communication to
better serve Spanish-speaking clients or patients.

  • Help ensure there is a critical mass of health and human
services professionals within the California workforce to serve
    the Spanish-speaking populations.

  • Participate in a service-learning internship at a local health
    agency.
