Academic Programs

The Department offers a B.S. in mathematics with five possible concentrations, in addition to minors in mathematics and applied statistics. The concentrations for the bachelor's degree are applied mathematics, economics, statistics, theoretical mathematics, and teaching mathematics.  With the completion of a mathematics major, a student, depending upon the choice of upper division courses, will be prepared to pursue: (1) a career in the mathematical sciences (Applied Concentration); (2) a course of graduate study in Economics (Economics Concentration), (3) a course of graduate study in Statistics or a career as a Statistician (Statistics Concentration), (4) a career in teaching (Teaching Concentration, normal or blended); or (5) a course of graduate study leading to an advanced degree (Theoretical Concentration).  Please visit our Advising page and Undergraduate Program page for more details.

Our Master of Arts degree in Teaching Mathematics for working mathematics teachers is in moratorium. The graduate program enabled educators to build on their own experiences while deepening their understanding of mathematics at the secondary school level.

Upon completion of our major, students are prepared to pursue careers in teaching or industry and are ready for graduate study leading to advanced degrees.  CSUB mathematics majors have gone on to graduate programs such as UC Santa Cruz, UC Davis, Iowa State University, and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, to name the latest, and have been recipients of  numerous distinctions in undergraduate research.
