New Scholarship Opportunity
There is a new S-STEM scholarship opportunity for STEM students! The scholarship provides up to $15k/year of support (exact amount depends on their unmet need as determined by Financial Aid) for low-income students. The eligibility criteria are:
- Majoring in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering, Engineering Sciences, Geology, Mathematics, or Physics
- Citizens of the United States, nationals of the United States (as defined in section 101(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act), aliens admitted as refugees under section 207 of the Immigration and Nationality Act, or aliens lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence
- Enrolled at least half-time
- Low-income with unmet financial need, as defined by Financial Aid
- Demonstrate academic ability or potential
The application requires a personal statement and is due on May 10th for priority consideration. CV PATH 2024 Summer Research Apprenticeship
The CV PATH Research Experience is a collaborative summer research opportunity for students from Bakersfield College and CSU Bakersfield to conduct faculty-mentored research. This research apprenticeship program is designed for students planning to attend a PhD program, and who are principally interested in applying to a doctoral program at UC Merced, though not exclusively.
Faculty can apply for a summer stipend of $7,000 to mentor two students.
Each student will earn a $2,500 stipend.
PROGRAM COMPONENTS
· Provide two students with apprenticeship research experience(s).
· Guide the research to produce a conference presentation or journal publication, with students as lead authors.
· Students will learn quantifiable, research toolsets in methodology, scientific writing, statistics, lab equipment operation, and research presentations in the field of study.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
· Student grade point average of 3.5 or higher; at sophomore, junior, or early senior class level.
· Students must have finished statistics and research methods classes in the discipline.
· Previous research experience is desirable but not required.
· Students from nontraditional backgrounds are encouraged to apply, these can include first generation, Pell Grant, and students who have traditionally been underrepresented in the disciplines where the doctoral degree is desired.
APPLICATION PROCESS
· Students must submit their resume, a 300-word summary of the proposed project, how it will be executed, preparation needed, anticipated outcome(s), and how it fits with initiating a pipeline into doctoral studies principally at UC Merced, though not exclusively.
· A letter of support from the faculty mentor, describing steps in guiding the mentoring relationship, and expected benefits to the faculty mentor from the collaboration with students.
