On April 14, Dr. Matt Herman traveled to Pasadena, CA, to attend the 2026 Seismological Society of America Annual Meeting. This meeting brings together scientists working on all aspects of earthquake problems, from earthquake sources, to Earth structure, to paleoseismology, and to earthquake engineering. He gave a talk about his research on what actually happened in the northernmost region of the great 1906 earthquake in California, and what kind of geological evidence might be visible to help distinguish between competing hypotheses. He also attended a special interest group discussion on induced seismicity monitoring in California, led by Kayla Kroll from LLNL, Ole Kaven from the USGS, and Kevin Kwong from CGS. The discussion focused on the features of seismic monitoring systems needed in California as carbon storage, enhanced geothermal, and other subsurface industries ramp up in the state.
