Dr. Krugh and Dr. Herman Share Their Expertise on the M 5.2 Lamont, CA Earthquake

On August 6, 2024, around 9:00 pm, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Lamont, only 17 miles south of Bakersfield. People nearby felt shaking for 10-15 seconds, and even many of our neighbors near Los Angeles felt the eearthquake. Although California is no stranger to earthquakes, with a long history of seismicity on the San Andreas Fault and other faults throughout the state, events like this one are reminders that we should be prepared not only for large earthquakes but also smaller events closer to home. To help explain the science of these earthquakes and how to protect yourself from them, Dr. Krugh talked to KGET Channel 17.

Dr. Herman, CSUB's resident seismologist, was coincidentally out of town during the earthquake. Still, after staying up all night to better understand the seismology, tectonics, and hazards of this event, he was able to talk to Valley Public Radio reporter Kerry Klein about earthquake risks in our region. Read Dr. Herman's comments in the KVPR article here!
