California State University Grant

The State University Grant (SUG) is unique to the California State University (CSU) system and is funded from a percentage of CSU system-wide student tuition fee revenues. Limited allocations are provided to campuses based on their enrollment levels and other student data. Award amounts may vary based on available funds. SUG funds are normally awarded for the fall and spring terms only.

General eligibility requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Be admitted to and enrolled at least half-time at a CSU campus:
    • Students cannot have accumulated more than 150 earned units in their CSU undergraduate careers.
    • Undergraduate students who may have exceeded the SUG unit limit (150 earned semester units or quarter unit equivalent) may appeal for a one-term extension of SUG eligibility if they are able to document a plan to finish a degree program within one term.
    • Undergraduate transfer students cannot accumulate more than 75 earned units while enrolled at CSUB.
    • Teacher Credential students cannot accumulate more than 45 earned units or the published length of their program, whichever is greater, while enrolled at CSUB, conditionally classified students are not eligible.
    • Graduate students cannot exceed more than 125% earned units of the published length of the program while enrolled at CSUB, conditionally classified students are not eligible.
    • 2nd BA, Credential and/or Master's degree programs are not eligible.
  •  Be classified as a California resident for financial aid and tuition fee payment purposes.
  • Pay the State University Tuition Fee (e.g., students enrolled in Extended University courses are not eligible, nor are students who do not pay State University Fee (SUF) because of some other form of aid).
  • Have a valid FAFSA/CADAA on file for the corresponding academic year.
  • Demonstrate financial need according to the FAFSA/CADAA need analysis.
  • Not be in default of a student loan.
  • Not owe a repayment of previously received student aid.
  • Be making satisfactory academic progress according to the standards established for financial aid purposes by the CSU campus.
  • Have an eligible Student Aid Index (SAI) according to the CSU campus SUG awarding methodology.

Priority awarding consideration will be given to students who meet all the following conditions:

  • Undergraduate students
  • "On- time" financial aid applicants
  • Undergraduates with an SAI less than 3250; Credential and Masters students with a -1500 SAI
  • Enrolled at least half- time
  • Have not received a grant, scholarship, or waiver designated for fees

Please Note: Students receiving other aid specifically earmarked for fees (e.g., Cal Grant, Athletic Grant Fee Awards, Fee Waivers, etc.) will have their SUG award reduced or canceled accordingly.
