Boundless Educator Teacher Residency

The Boundless Educator Teacher Residency (BETR) program is rooted in shared responsibility and a deep commitment to preparing educators who reflect, reveal, and open doors for the students and communities they serve. Inspired by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s framework of mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, BETR supports educators in cultivating classrooms where students see themselves reflected, are invited to learn about others, and are empowered to imagine new possibilities.

BETR brings together residents, mentor teachers, university faculty, and school partners in meaningful collaboration to support both educator development and student success. With over 900 hours of immersive training, well beyond the 600 hours typical of traditional teacher preparation, residents experience the full arc of the school year while gradually assuming instructional responsibilities with sustained guidance and support.

Throughout the program, the BETR community engages in practices that center care, reflection, and responsiveness to students’ lived experiences. We approach our work with empathy and purpose, striving to create learning environments where every student feels respected, supported, and understood. These commitments shape how we teach, mentor, and grow together.

Ongoing feedback, reflective dialogue, and shared inquiry strengthen our relationships and deepen our collective impact. By embracing the role of educator as mirror, window, and sliding glass door, BETR nurtures a professional community grounded in equity, connection, and the boundless potential of every learner.

Mission and Vision

The Boundless Educator Teacher Residency (BETR) is committed to preparing future educators through a community-centered model grounded in shared responsibility, strong mentorship, and sustained classroom experience. We embed teacher candidates in meaningful, hands-on learning environments and equip them with the tools to meet the needs of the students and families they will serve. Guided by Dr. Rudine Sims Bishop’s framework of mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors, we support residents in developing the knowledge and dispositions to affirm students’ identities, honor diverse perspectives, and open pathways to possibility.

We envision a connected network of educators prepared to create classrooms where all students feel seen, valued, and inspired to grow. BETR strengthens public education by developing thoughtful practitioners who reflect the communities they serve, collaborate with purpose, and lead with care, curiosity, and commitment.
