Our Mission

The mission of the Institute for Basque Studies is to promote multidisciplinary scholarship and collaboration that examines social, cultural, historical, economic, and political aspects of Basque communities in the Diaspora and the Basque Country.  Institute activities will explore definitions and cultivations of Basque identity through the study of art, image, values, and other cultural expressions through offering enrichment programs for students and special publics, and sponsoring lectures, symposia, and other events related to Basque identity.  The Institute aims to facilitate externally funded research and innovative activities which advance research, public service, and relationships among global Basque communities, and contribute to the mission of the University.  The Institute also aims to promote Basque language acquisition and greater awareness of the Basque presence in the Central Valley through delivering content accessible to both students and the community at large.
