Admission Requirements

Thank you for your interest in the Educational Counseling program. Applications for Fall 2024 are due on March 1, 2024. 

Step 1: BA or BS Degree

Complete a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale) from an accredited university (Under special circumstances, provisional admission may be granted for applicants who do not meet this criteria.  If provisionally admitted, a student must maintain a minimum of 3.0 graduate GPA after 12 or more semester units are completed). 

Step 2: Basic Skills Requirement for School Counseling/PPS only (not required for Student Affairs admission)

If you have valid documentation of meeting this requirement, please submit it with your application.


Step 3: Statistics

Successful completion of an undergraduate statistics class within 7 years of application to the program with a grade of "C" or higher. 

Step 4: Mandatory Reporter Educator Training

Step 5: Certificate of Clearance

Evidence of Fingerprint Clearance from the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC). Provide a copy of a valid Certificate of Clearance, valid sub-permit or a California Credential.”

Step 6: University Application for Graduate Study

Choose your Graduate Master's in Educational Counseling Program: School Counseling/PPS or Student Affairs

Step 7: Counseling Program Application 

Submit a completed MS-School Counseling/Student Affairs Program Application to the submittal portal in one PDF file.

Step 8: Check the Status of your University and EDCS Program Application

You may check your admissions status online at myCSUB. You will receive an email from CSUB Admissions and Records acknowledging receipt of your application along with your specific CSUB ID number and login instructions. Pay particular attention to any outstanding "To-do" list items that you need to complete.

Step 9:  EDCS Program Admission Interview (updated 3/20 due to COVID-19)

Due to COVID-19, the usual practice of interviewing applicants in a group setting may be modified to meet Social Distancing guidelines.  You will be contacted if you are selected for an interview.

Step 10: Purchase Professional Liability Insurance

Please be advised that steps mentioned above are the MINIMUM requirements for admission - meeting them DOES NOT GUARANTEE program admission. Additional factors,  and notably budgetary constraints, may affect admissions decisions.
