Knowmia to Panopto Transition
May 18, 2023
What's Happening
TechSmith's Knowmia, our streaming and storage media service, is being sunset by the vendor on November 12th, 2023. As a result, Information Technology Services (ITS) and Faculty Teaching and Learning Center (FTLC) worked with the Academic Senate to approve a new streaming and storage service, with Senate approval on 12/22/2022, and have begun the transition to Panopto.
Through July 2023, ITS will be working to migrate all Knowmia content to Panopto. ITS and the FTLC will be working to migrate all Knowmia video links within Canvas to Panopto in an effort to avoid interruption.
What this Means
Your videos will remain intact and be accessible to you in Panopto. On August 1, 2023 Panopto will be available for the campus and will begin its service as the new Video on Demand service for the campus.
Knowmia will continue to function for a short time at the beginning of the semester.
However, Knowmia will stop accepting new video content after the start of the Fall semester start and will no longer be accessible in October 2023. Its important to transition away from Knowmia early to avoid interruption at the end of the semester.
This has no effect on other TechSmith products such as Camtasia. Camtasia will be able to upload directly to Panopto in the same way it used to upload to Knowmia.
Zoom cloud recordings will shift from backing up to Knowmia to automatically copying to Panopto.
In the coming weeks ITS will provide additional information on training and how to access your Panopto Library.
Summer courses that use Knowmia will not be affected by this transition.
What you need to do
After August 1 2023, it is imperative to verify that Knowmia links in services like Canvas have been updated to use Panopto links in the rare event that a link is missed during the transition. Any canvas quizzes that are attached to Knowmia Videos will need to be verified and possibly rebuilt.
Any websites or other means of video sharing that rely on Knowmia video links need to be updated to use the new Panopto links to those videos after August 1st.
ITS will continue to communicate about the switch from Knowmia to Panopto over ITS News. Upon your return to campus please make sure to validate your links.
Additional Help and Resources
Beginning August thru October: Trainings on how to use Panopto will be offered. This includes how to create videos, embedding quizzes into videos, creating video folders for courses, embedding videos into Canvas, and more.
To get a head start and learn general information about Panopto, Panopto offers a wide selection of video tutorials at https://howtovideos.hosted.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Folders/DepartmentHome.aspx?folderID=4b9de7ae-0080-4158-8496-a9ba01692c2e
