Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Welcome to Academic Affairs at California State University, Bakersfield!
The Academic Affairs Division is focused on creating a meaningful learning environment with academic rigor and a challenging curriculum. Working with all of our students and guiding them to reach their potentials is an important goal for us. We want all of our Bakersfield campus and Antelope Valley campus students to succeed and feel included. Supporting and celebrating diversity in terms of different identity groups: racial, ethnic, Native American, gender, LGBTQ, age, disability/ability, and international is the bedrock of who we are at CSUB.
We have many plans for this academic year. During this final year of the conversion to semesters we will focus on establishing an individualized academic plan for each student. The conversion has required a great deal of work on the part of faculty to revise the curriculum for the majors and general education requirements. Staff in every office campus-wide have reworked their operations to make this conversion. We look forward to the fall of 2016 when we will begin our new semester system.
Another focal point for us is the Graduation Initiative. It challenges us to reduce the time to graduation and improve our graduation rates. We want students to reduce the cost of attending CSUB by assisting them to graduate in four years.
We have many students whose parents did not attend college. I was a first generation student too. First generation students have families who want to support them and the faculty and staff also are dedicated to supporting them in their educational goals to earn a college degree.
The faculty and staff at CSUB are working towards the common goal of providing a high quality education for our students. These students are our future. We want an educated workforce. We want an educated population. We want people who serve their communities. We want mothers and fathers who will raise the next generation for our world. A CSUB degree will provide that.
We are excited to greet the class of 2019 as they begin their journey at CSUB this fall, and we look forward to celebrating with the graduates of 2016 at the spring commencement!
