THE ONLINE MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Must I be admitted to CSU Bakersfield before I begin taking classes?
Yes
2. What are the admission requirements to enter CSUB?
You should apply for admission when: (1) you have completed the CSUB admission requirements for transfer and (2) you have completed most of the lower division course work that can be completed in a community college and are ready to begin taking courses from CSUB.
3. What are the admission requirements to gain admittance into the School of Education?
4. Can I 'exchange' courses between the BTSA (Field Emphasis Track) and the Ed. Track?
5. What is the refund policy?
Full refund of Extended University fees is made only when a class is canceled. Students withdrawing from courses will be refunded 65% of fee collected until 25% (approximately two weeks) of instructional meetings have occurred, after which time no refund will be given. Nonattendance or notifying the instructor is not officially withdrawing from a course. To receive a refund, students must officially drop their course(s) with the instructor’s signed consent on an Extended University Drop form. The Drop form and the Extended University’s Request for Refund form must be submitted to the Extended University Office prior to 6 p.m. on the deadline date (see Open University Academic Calendar). All refunds, including credit card payments, are made by check from the State of California. Allow approximately two weeks for refund processing.
6. What is the application fee?
The APPLICATION FEE for the MA education is $75.00
7. How much are classes?
Courses, in the certificate or baccalaureate program, run in the range of $70.00 to $145.00 per unit.
8. If I do enroll in an on-line course, are there certain times in which I must sign on?
Depends. You can download notes and assignments at any time but your instructor will post a calender noting when assignments are due. There are some courses, however, such as “Negotiation and Conflict Management”, where students must plan ahead to meet in the chat room to work through a hypothetical negotiation.
9. How do I obtain text books?
Textbooks are obtained through the CSUB bookstore. The class schedule page will have a link that provides a list of all the textbooks necessary for each course offered. Complete the form and fax it directly to the bookstore. The staff will ship the books directly to your home, normally, by UPS.
10. What kind of computer do I need to access online coursework?
Today, most PC's or MAC's come fully equipped to handle all the demands that an online course would require. A minimum configuration for a PC would include: Pentium II or III processor, 64 MB RAM, 75 MB of free disk space, a high end graphics card and a 56K modem. A Power Mac running System 7 with 16 MB RAM, 75 MB of free disk space, and a 56K modem would be sufficient. In addition, we have found that students are more successful if they have a full featured word processing program, a fundamental understanding of using spreadsheets and building presentations using Powerpoint. Currently, on-line courses do not take advantage of streaming video or the use of sound cards, although that may change in the future as courses become more sophisticated in delivery.
Please note: It is understood that students who register for on-line courses have developed a set of computer skills that includes; an understanding of the internet, converting and attaching files, as well as file compression and extraction. In addition, students should know their home workstation configuration and platform.
