Campus Champions

As with our sister campuses, CSUB's Information Technology Services department did a mass transition of instructional and support services from mostly being focused on-campus to being virtual. ITS groups had to continue to support functions on campus and keep the lights running, but also support an exodus and innovate at a tremendous rate.

Virtual Computer Lab and Virtualized Environments for Staff/Faculty

Since students could no longer access software on campus, we needed to deliver a solution to allow all our software to be accessible virtually. We worked with Apporto to deliver a solution for our campus. Furthermore, we needed to provide a virtualized environment to support our remote helpdesk students and users who needed access to level one/two data.

Chromebook and Hotspot Distribution

To support student success, our Cabinet and University Advancement groups provided funds for the purchase of Chromebooks and hotspots for our students. We distributed more than 300 Chromebooks and 100 hotspots.

Telecommuting Policy and Sending Equipment Off Campus Securely

To support our Human Resources group and policies, we developed a telecommuting policy and equipment checkout process.

VoIP and Softphones

Our campus was still transitioning from analog to VoIP, meaning many of our users needed a way to continue to have phone services at home. We quickly provided another 100 softphones to our employees and migrated their numbers over.

Zoom and Migrating Our Campus to Online

Our Zoom usage was limited prior to March 2020. While we had some Zoom resources, we quickly developed a wealth of resources and provided training and support for our campus.

Enabling Canvas and Blackboard for Spring Instruction (Training, Proctoring)

CSUB was a Blackboard campus and in the midst of selecting Canvas as our next Learning Management System (LMS). The team needed to train and support our faculty within these LMS options.

Enabling AdobeSign

Our campus was mostly a paper-based campus. With our staff moving off campus, a solution for electronic document signing and routing was critical. This team brought up AdobeSign, started creating templates, and developed training to support our campus staff and faculty.

Reducing Administrative Barriers – Financial Aid Online Form Submission

Due to the sensitive nature of Financial Aid documents, we couldn't have students email their documents to our Financial Aid office. Most of our students did not have access to fax machines, so we developed a system to allow submission of documents online that went directly into OnBase.

COVID-19 Website

The campus needed a new website to promote all information regarding COVID-19 and the action our campus was taking. This website was critical in communicating information to our staff, students, faculty, parents, and community.

Campus Continuity Site

This site was built to support online tools and services, and show how to use them remotely. It provided information on accessing internet providers, discount programs, and provided information to faculty, staff, and students.

Maintaining a Secure Remote Environment (Tennable, BigFix, SCCM, JamF)

With our staff and faculty taking stateside equipment home, we needed a way to deliver security patches to our systems.
