Calliope
Calliope is an academic journal that publishes literary criticism, scholarship, and book reviews written by students at California State University, Bakersfield. It is produced annually by the English Department. The purpose of the publication is to encourage critical understanding of literary and artistic works and to share those perspectives with others. The editorial team is faculty advised but composed of students, who learn publishing practices and oversee every step of review, layout, and production.
We are excited to announce that the Department of English at CSUB is welcoming submissions for Calliope! For our 2025 issue, we are looking for essays by Arts & Humanities students that address any aspect of literature, art, and culture. In addition, we are accepting book reviews on recently published literary works. Publishing in a journal is a major accomplishment, so we hope you consider sending your work to Calliope.
Submission Details:
- Essay submissions can be 5-15 pages. We accept a broad range of academic essays, whether they are focused on literary analysis, close reading, or research. There are no restrictions on historical period or literary genre being studied in your essay.
- Book reviews can be 2-5 pages. We are especially interested in reviews that cover recently awarded books by prizes such as the National Book Award or the Booker Prize Award, though we are equally as interested in reviews that address underrepresented literatures.
- Essays and book reviews are to follow MLA Style guidelines (Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced, Works Cited page).
Submission & Review Process:
- Please submit your work by midnight on March 1, 2025 to calliope@csub.edu from your @csub.edu account.
- After submission, the editorial team will acknowledge receipt of your work through email.
- The submission will be anonymized for a blind review process to ensure the editorial team is objective and fair at all stages of the process.
- The entire editorial team will carefully review your work collectively.
- Once a consensus has been reached, you will be contacted on whether the work has been selected for publication.
- Any additional edit requests will be sent to the author following selection.
