Spring 2023 Commencement

Spring commencement is for:

  • Spring 2023 graduates;
  • Summer 2023 graduates who submit their summer course registration by the RSVP deadline of April 20 to the commencement office via email; and
    • Course registration begins April 10.
  • Fall 2022 graduates who didn't participate in the 2022 fall commencement.
    • Fall 2022 graduates must email the commencement office by April 20 to be added to the ceremony.

Location: CSUB Main Soccer Field

There are two undergraduate ceremonies. Please check the majors for each ceremony.

RSVP

  • RSVP begins Monday, March 20 and ends Thursday, April 20.
  • Students who are eligible to graduate and don't receive an email by Tuesday, March 21, should contact the Commencement Office before Friday, April 21 to determine their eligibility. 
  • Students must complete the form by Thursday, April 20 to ensure their name announced at the ceremony is accurate.

Guest Tickets

Eight guest tickets per graduate will be issued for online retrieval beginning May 1 - May 20.

  • All guests four years and older are required to have a guest ticket to enter the venue.
  • Guests three years and younger are considered lap children and do not require a guest ticket to enter the venue.

Cap and Gown Purchase

For in-person only, caps, gowns, other attire, and graduate items will be available for purchase in the CSUB Bookstore.

Online orders are shipped directly from Josten's to the students' homes. Online ordering shipping takes approximately 2-3 weeks. Deadline to order online is Wednesday, April 26.

2023 Spring Commencement Grad Fest Dates (spring and summer graduates only)

  • Antelope Valley - Tuesday, March 21, 2023, noon - 6pm, Student Lounge
  • Bakersfield Campus - Thursday, March 23, 2023, 11am - 6pm, Student Union Multi-Purpose Room

What's the difference between Graduation and Commencement?

Graduation is the completion and awarding of your degree and mailing of your diploma. This is overseen by the Office of the Registrar. The Office of the Registrar can assist students with:

  • Changing their graduation application term
  • Instructions on how to submit their online graduation application

Commencement is the celebration of your academic achievement of earning a degree in higher education. The commencement ceremonies are overseen by the Commencement Office. The Commencement Office can assist student with:

  • Ceremony questions
  • Services provided at the ceremonies
  • Cap and gown questions
  • Recognition and cultural ceremonies

Honors Cords - Honors status is determined by your GPA, both CSUB and Overall GPA must meet GPA indicated below. Students may locate their GPA in the student portal. The Commencement Office doesn't have access to students' GPAs.

There is only one honors cord which is gold. Students may purchase an honors cord when they purchase their regalia.

magna cum laude
3.6 to 3.89 GPA

cum laude
3.3 to 3.59 GPA

Grad Fest & FAQ Open Forums

Frequently Asked Questions Open Forums via Zoom will be on:

  • Friday, March 24, noon-1pm
  • Thursday, April 20, 3-4pm

Zoom link will be sent to commencement eligible students.


Cap and Gown Purchases

For in-person only, the CSUB Bookstore has caps, gowns, stoles, tassels, and diploma frames available for purchase.
