What is Siteimprove?
Siteimprove is a cloud-based web scanning system for web accessibility. It scans/crawls your websites automatically to detect and identify the issues (accessibility, broken links, misspellings) on the weekly basis. Once the scan/scrawl is complete, it sends out reports to the users/web liaisons via emails.
How to Start?
You will receive an email of Welcome to Siteimprove. Open the email and click the Siteimprove web link for SSO (Single Sign-On) login, and this directs you to our CSUB SSO login page. Please use your CSUB credentials for login.
How to Read Siteimprove Report?
After you login to Siteimprove, you will see your Siteimprove Dashboard. Please ensure the Dashboard is selected and Web Accessibility Report dashboard is displayed. If your website is not displayed after California State University, Bakersfield, click the Down arrow key and select the site you want to display. If you have more than one site in your account, you can select one by one to display by clicking the Down arrow key.
Once your desired Web Accessibility Report Dashboard is displayed correctly, there are three sections listed which are Broken Links, Misspellings and Accessibility. If you see smile face for Broken Links or Misspellings, it indicates you did a good job. If you see no pages or issues listed under Issues for accessibility with "This table is currently empty - no data to display", no action is needed at this time.
Note: If your websites are developed and maintained by a third-party or outside ITS Web Services; under Issues, please click the Down arrow key next to the box with default of Beginner, then select other options which apply and click the Down arrow key next to the box with default of Content Writing, then select other options which apply to view the issue types. Under Pages with Issues, please do the same above and view the list of pages with issues. Alternatively, you can click Improve score on Accessibility widget to view the full list of issues on the website.
If you see numbers in either Broken Links circle or Misspellings circle, that indicates the number of issues. Click Broken Links or Misspellings, it will take you to specific page where the issues are listed. If there are any accessibility issues identified, they are listed at the lower part of the page with Issue type and Pages with issues.
How to Address Issues?
Broken Links
- Click Broken Links on the dashboard.
- You will be directed to page where broken links are listed. Click Pages with Broken Links on the left navigation panel, and this will show all pages with broken links.
- Click each page with broken links and replace them with correct link addresses.
- Click Edit in CMS in the system or CMS after each page name if your website is in MyWeb, and this will direct you to the specific page which allows you to address the issues in MyWeb. Note: if your website is in Cascade Server or other systems, you need go to your system, find the page with issue(s) and address issue(s) there.
- After you believe you have addressed the issues in WCMS, choose Re-Check button in Siteimprove to check the page and ensure the issues are properly addressed.
- Sometimes false positive broken links might occur. If false positive broken links are identified and confirmed, you can go to the end of each listed broken link; click the Down arrow key, choose Dismiss Forever, and then click Confirm. Doing this the false positive broken links will not appear as broken links in the future.
Misspellings
- Click Misspellings on the dashboard.
- You will be directed to page where misspellings are listed. Click Pages with Misspellings or Words to Review on the left navigation panel, and this will show all pages with misspellings.
- Replace the misspellings with the correct words or approve the words.
- Click Edit in CMS in the system or CMS after each page name if your website is in MyWeb, and this will direct you to the specific page which allows you to address the issues in MyWeb. Note: if your website is in Cascade Server or other systems, you need go to your system, find the page with issue(s) and address issue(s) there.
- Choose Re-Check button to check the page and ensure the issues are properly addressed.
Accessibility
Once the accessibility issues are detected and identified, both Issue type and page with issues are listed at the bottom of the dashboard.
- Click each of the Issue type under Issues, such as Image without an alternative text.
- Follow the issue type link and this will direct you to a page with links under the issue type.
- Click each link and this will lead you to a page where the issues are located.
- Click Edit in CMS in the system or CMS after each page name if your website is in MyWeb, and this will direct you to the specific page which allows you to address the issues in MyWeb. Note: if your website is in Cascade Server or other systems, you need go to your system, find the page with issue(s) and address issue(s) there.
- Choose Re-Check button to check the page after remediation and ensure the issues are properly addressed.
