March 11, 2013 - CSU Bakersfield today announced a generous gift from CSUB faculty member Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley specifically designated to further academic excellence at CSUB. Dr. Kegley has committed to provide a total of $200,000 to establish two funds that will be used to create, maintain, and enhance the newly announced Dr. Jacquelyn Kegley Center for Student Success.
"My family and I have long been dedicated to academic success and enrichment. To create this endowed fund, which is dedicated to supporting an environment that is conducive to that goal, is a wonderful realization of a lifetime's work," said Dr. Kegley.
Dr. Kegley, Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, is a highly respected and distinguished member of the CSUB faculty, where she has taught for the past 44 years. In addition, Dr. Kegley is the current Chair of the Academic Senate.
"Dr. Kegley is an outstanding teacher-scholar. Not only has she distinguished herself in her discipline through her well-regarded scholarship, but she also served as President of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. Moreover, her scholarly work is equally balanced by her being an exemplary teacher. She is highly regarded by her students and has been recognized as one of the CSU system-wide Wang Outstanding Professors," remarked Dr. Soraya Coley, Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs. "This gift is a testament to the investment she has made, and continues to make in students' academic success; to her longstanding commitment to CSUB; and to the ideals of excellence and opportunity that will extend to future generations."
"This commitment by Dr. Kegley is the largest gift ever by a CSUB faculty member. It will play a vital role in advancing our academic goals and supporting student success and graduation. I appreciate greatly Dr. Kegley's generosity with this gift and her many years of outstanding service to the University and our students," said Dr. Horace Mitchell, President of CSUB.
The Kegley Center for Student Success will be located in what is currently Modular West on Student Way directly across the street from the residence halls. This facility will provide space for workshops, tutoring, study sessions and group advising meetings as well as offer collaborative sessions with other campus resources such as the Center for Community Engagement and Career Education, Financial Aid and the Health Center. The establishment of the Center also creates a permanent home for the Athletics Academic Advising Program.
