Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Fall 2016

Welcome to Academic Affairs at California State University, Bakersfield and our first year on a semester calendar system!  It was a short summer for us as we departed a quarter system in June and returned to a semester system in August.  This year we will continue monitoring the transition to semesters and make any necessary adjustments.

This fall semester also marks the beginning of our innovative, student-learning-focused Achieving Integration & Mastering Skills (AIMS) general education program. Marked by intentional reinforcement of foundational skills throughout the curriculum, thematic pathways making possible a thematic minor for students, and general education touchpoints in the freshman/freshwoman, junior, and senior years, we expect this program to improve our student retention and graduation rate in both the near and long term.

We are focused on the CSU Graduation Initiative that sets goals for our graduation and retention rates for 2025.  Our strategic priorities are centered on student success by improving our administrative operations and academic advising practices as well as expanding High Impact Practices such as student research, internships, and study abroad opportunities.

This fall we welcome 33 new tenure-track faculty and 12 new full-time lecturers, the largest cohort in many years. They join a dedicated faculty who secured more than $13 million in external grants and contracts, many of which include undergraduate and graduate student research.  Success in the classroom is evident by the number of students who receive academic awards in their disciplines, are placed in highly competitive graduate, law, and medical schools, and secure jobs that launch them into their careers.

Our staff, many CSUB alums themselves, are committed to supporting our students in their academic careers here.  I continue to be impressed by the genuine care they provide for our students.

We are focused on new priorities to internationalize the campus with more study abroad programs, international student recruitment, faculty exchanges, a strong English language training program, and academic programs.  Our new Affinity Groups are developing a culturally supportive sense of community for our faculty, staff, and students.  The Antelope Valley Campus is blossoming as we strengthen the existing academic programs offered at the campus.

I look forward to another productive and rewarding year with my colleagues at CSUB.

It is a good time to be a Roadrunner!
