March 4, 2013 - The School of Social Sciences and Education at California State University, Bakersfield invites the public to its Second Annual Activity Series devoted to improving the quality of life in Kern County. This will include a two-part lecture series and a 5k run, geared towards educating the community on being healthy in both body and mind.
The Second Annual St. Patrick's Day 5k Walk/Run will take place on Saturday, March 16th at The Park at Riverwalk. Registration begins at 7am, walk starts at 8:30am. Pre-registration cost is $22 by March 11th, $25 the day of the event. There will be contests for "most green" and raffle prizes. Registration form can be downloaded at www.csub.edu/sse/.
The first lecture will begin with "Five Science-Based Strategies to Make You Happier," given by Steve Bacon, Ph.D, on Thursday, March 14th at 6:30pm. The second lecture, "Creating Physically Active Communities: Linking Families, Schools and the Community," will be given by Ken Dyar. This will take place on Thursday, April 11th at 6:30pm. Both lectures will be held inside the CSUB Student Union Multipurpose Room.
Dr. Bacon worked as a clinical psychologist for HealthSouth Rehabilitation prior to joining the faculty of CSUB in 1995. He now teaches introductory psychology and graduate clinical courses in the Counseling MS Program. He has also taught abnormal psychology, health psychology, positive psychology and research methods.
Dyar was named a CA Teacher of the year in 2006. Prior to becoming Director of Physical Education and After-School Programs for the Delano Union School District, he taught physical education for 18 years. He also serves as the Program Director for DUSD's after school program -- POWER (Powerful Outcomes in Wellness, Education & Recreation).
