February 28, 2013 -- The Music Department at CSU Bakersfield is pleased to present the 37th Annual Jazz Jam on Friday, March 8, 2013. The concert will feature the music of Los Angeles based woodwind artist and composer Kim Richmond performing with the CSUB Jazz Ensemble under the direction of Jim Scully. The concert begins at 8 PM and tickets are available at the door. Tickets cost $12/general; $8/seniors and kids 12 and under and students are FREE with ID.
This event - a staple on this campus for nearly 40 years - is a wonderful opportunity for our students and community to be immersed in the music of a transformative artist - and better yet - work with that artist to bring the music to life.
Mr. Richmond is a versatile musician with experience in all aspects of the music industry. He is a performer, a composer/arranger and an educator. He has been a member of some of the most important large jazz ensembles of the last 50 years. Stints with Stan Kenton, Louis Bellson, Bob Florence, Bill Holman and Vinny Golia helped shape his aesthetic, which he now refines with his group - the Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Ensemble.
Jim Scully, Director of the CSUB Jazz Ensemble is excited to present this music and share these great tunes with his students and our jazz loving community. "This music is extraordinary. It is orchestral. It swings. There is room for improvisation. It is modern and traditional. It is composed and free. It is everything music for large jazz ensemble should be. The students have learned a lot about asymmetrical phrasing, orchestration and ensemble playing while working up these tunes. It has been an education for us all! I can't wait to share them with the audience!"
The CSUB Jazz Ensemble became a student-only group this year, meeting for 1-hour, three times per week. This change made learning this music possible. With more consistent rehearsal times the band has grown and the learning process has been streamlined.
