July 19, 2011 — California State University, Bakersfield will host a semi-annual Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Recycling event from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 4 and 5 and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 6. The event is open to all residents and businesses in Kern County. To drop off items, enter campus from Camino Media on Roadrunner Drive and turn right into Parking Lot I.

CSUB collected 35 tons of electronic waste during its last e-waste recycling event in January this year. State regulations make it unlawful to dispose of "universal waste," including all electronic devices, in common trash receptacles.

Electronic items that will be accepted include, but are not limited to, answering machines, camcorders, CD players, copiers, DVD/VCR players, electric typewriters, electronic games, fax machines, laptops, mainframe computers, cell phones, modems, pagers, PDAs, personal computers (CPUs, monitors, keyboards, mice, and peripherals), printers, radios, remote controls, scanners, stereos, tape players, telephones and telephone equipment, televisions, testing equipment, and two-way radios.

Batteries must be removed from devices prior to drop off. CSUB cannot accept batteries, light tubes or bulbs, mercury waste or used oil. Please contact the Kern County Waste Management Department for proper recycling of these items.
