MEMORANDUM

From: CSUB President Horace Mitchell

To: The Campus Community

Oct, 22, 2010

Last night there was a scheduled small event on campus that grew significantly larger, unexpectedly, as many individuals who are not affiliated with the campus joined in.

Around 11:00 p.m. an altercation broke out in an adjacent parking lot (F) and shots were fired. A young woman, who was not a CSUB student, was hit and, tragically, she subsequently died.

Our hearts go out to the family of Bianca Jackson, the victim of this senseless act of violence. This appears to have been an isolated incident and there is no continuing danger for anyone on campus.

The campus is safe. It is open and all classes will be held as usual.

I want to thank the Bakersfield Police Department for their assistance to the University Police who were on scene shutting down the event when the shots were fired. The Bakersfield Police Department responded immediately upon the request of the University Police and they have now taken over the investigation.

Faculty, staff and students were notified of this situation earlier this morning through our emergency alert system. I will address any concerns the campus community might have at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Union Multi-Purpose Room.
