The Li’i Pearl Outstanding Student in English Award
Supported through the great generosity of the Pearl and Bandy families since 2007, The Li’i Pearl Outstanding Student in English Award was created by an anonymous donor and named in honor of Julia ‘Li’i’ Pearl to honor a student who has made a special contribution to the department, the school, the university, and the community at large and who serves as a "proud representative" of the department. Congratulations to Veronica Wilson! Veronica Wilson is a double major in English and Religious Studies, and she will graduate in June 2012. Her current GPA at CSUB is 3.7. She has twice been a T.A. for Religious Studies 100, twice as well for English 101 and Greek (RS 303). A member of Sigma Tau Delta, the English Honor Society, she works as a tutor in the Arts and Humanities tutoring center for both English and Religious Studies. As president of the Interfaith Student Alliance, a new club on campus that she helped start this year, Veronica works closely with the Muslim Students Association, Club GEN and the Gay Lesbian and Straight Student Network (GLSSN) in an attempt to encourage community understanding and discourse among different religious and social groups. Recently she was invited to present her paper “The Style of Holocaust Memoir in Night and How it Contributes to Reader Experience” at the Philosophy and Religious Studies Conference at CSUB on April 28th. Off campus, Veronica a member of the California Peoples of Faith Working Against the Death Penalty and is helping to plan a visit to CSUB from Author Sister Helen Prejean, writer of Dead Man Walking. She is also involved with a group called Progressive Peoples of Faith, recently founded in Bakersfield, that attempts to bring together politically liberal people from different religious organizations in the community and combine efforts in political activism. This fall, she plans to begin the M.A. program in English at CSUB.
