2003 Activities and Events for Alcohol and Drug Education at CSUB
Outreach Events:
February (winter quarter):
Sweet on You outreach program CSUB-AV campus Feb 13th: An outreach centered around alcohol and its link with sexual responsibility was conducted close to Valentine´s Day. The committee created "sweet on you packets" to give to students at the booth. These contained information on abstinence, STD´s, contraception, alcohol link, and chocolates.
March (winter quarter):
Safe Spring Break outreach March 12th: Safe Spring Break is a great opportunity for the university to get the students ready for all the fun of spring break while encouraging them to make positive choices for their own health as well as the safety of their friends. Through the promotion of safe drinking and sober driving, abstinence and responsible use of alcohol, the committee hopes to reduce the number of injuries among students during the break. April (Spring quarter):
Alcohol screening Day April 10th: National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) takes place in April and is an annual outreach, education and screening program that raises awareness about alcohol use and alcohol use disorders. Persons who visit the anonymous screening can assess their alcohol use and learn about the full range of drinking problems as well as what to do and where to go if they need help.
May (spring quarter):
- Greek Week presentation of "Alcohol Jeopardy" May 22nd: At the request of the Greek organizations on campus, the committee presented its program to all of the Greek organizations on campus. The response to the program was great with over 50 students in attendance.
- CSUB-AV Campus Health Fair May 14th: The committee wanted to promote healthy decision-making, wellness and alcohol awareness to the student. We invited organizations that promote healthy decision-making, offer treatment services, promote prevention or offer alternatives to drinking out for the health fair. The committee also made it a BBQ health fair. The committee offered free hotdogs, chips and lemonade to students. The committee had a booth at the fair as well with information handouts, promotional giveaways and visuals.
- CSUB Health and Wellness Fair May 28th: The committee wanted to promote healthy decision- making, wellness and alcohol awareness to the student. The committee felt that a health fair was a great way to do this. We invited organizations that promote healthy decision-making, offer treatment services, promote prevention or offer alternatives to drinking out for the health fair. Some of the organizations included 24-hour fitness, Department of Public Health, Buck Owens Wellness Resource Center, and the Massage Training Institute. Many of these organizations were offering free services that day to the students such as blood sugar screenings, blood pressure screenings, free day to passes to the gym, and free massages. The committee had a booth at the fair as well with information handouts, promotional giveaways and visual aides.
October (fall quarter):
Alcohol Awareness week 20th -24th: The weeklong event will be to support students who choose not to drink, promote drinking safety for those who do drink and are of legal age, and to show that there are nonalcoholic ways to have fun. The CSUB Alcohol and Drug Education Committee is currently planning a variety of activities including educational outreaches, trainings, and rally. The committee will also continue to sponsor AA meetings on campus.
