2002 Outreach Activities
January (winter quarter):
- Sweet on You outreach program CSUB-AV campus Jan 24th: An outreach activity centered on alcohol and its link with sexual responsibility was conducted close to Valentine´s Day. The committee created "sweet on you packets" to give to students at the booth. These contained information on abstinence, STD´s, contraception, alcohol link, and chocolates.
March (winter quarter):
- Safe Spring Break outreach March 13th: Safe Spring Break is a great opportunity for the University to get the students ready for all the fun of spring break, while encouraging them to make positive choices for their own health as well as the safety of their friends. Through the promotion of safe drinking and sober driving, abstinence and responsible use of alcohol, the committee hopes to reduce the number of injuries among students during the break. Safe spring break packets were given out containing information on alcohol use, binge drinking, designated driver card, sun safety issues, and STD information.
April (spring quarter):
- Alcohol Screening Day April 11th: National Alcohol Screening Day (NASD) takes place in April and is an annual outreach, education and screening program that raises awareness about alcohol use and alcohol use disorders. Persons who visit the anonymous screening can assess their alcohol use and learn about the full range of drinking problems, as well as what to do and where to go if they need help.
May (spring quarter):
- Greek Week presentation of "Survivor: How Not To Become The Weakest Link": At the request of the Greek organizations on campus, the committee presented its program to all of the Greek organizations on campus. The response to the program was great with over 50 students in attendance.
- CSUB-AV Campus Health Fair May 23rd: The committee wanted to promote healthy decision-making, wellness and alcohol awareness to the students. We invited organizations that promote healthy decision-making, offer treatment services, promote prevention or offer alternatives to drinking for the health fair. The committee also made it a BBQ health fair. The committee offered free hotdogs, chips and lemonade to students. The committee had a booth at the fair as well with information handouts, promotional giveaways and visuals.
- CSUB Health and Wellness Fair May 29th: The committee wanted to promote healthy decision- making, wellness and alcohol awareness to the students. The committee felt that a health fair was a great way to do this. We invited organizations that promote healthy decision-making, offer treatment services, promote prevention or offer alternatives to drinking for the health fair. Some of the organizations included 24-hour Fitness, Department of Public Health, Buck Owens Wellness Resource Center, and the Massage Training Institute. Many of these organizations were offering free services that day to the students such as blood sugar screenings, blood pressure screenings, free day passes to the gym, and free massages. The committee had a booth at the fair as well with information handouts, promotional giveaways and visual aides.
October (fall quarter):
- OKSOBERFEST CSUB-AV campus October 3rd: The event was to support students who choose not to drink, promote drinking safety for those who do drink and are of legal age, and to show that there are nonalcoholic ways to have fun. The activity included the BYOB booklet, flyers, and referral sources.
- Second Annual OKSOBERFEST at CSUB Alcohol Awareness week October
21st-25th: The weeklong event was to support students who choose not to drink,
promote drinking safety for those who do drink and are of legal age, and to show that
there are nonalcoholic ways to have fun. The programming that worked well with last year´s
event was kept and other programs were added and revamped for this year´s event. For the
second annual OKSOBERFEST, the committee felt the activities needed to be both day and night
events. Therefore, the committee added 3 new evening programs to the OKSOBERFEST weeklong
events. Also for this year, the committee was able to get more student groups involved in the
event. Associated Students Inc, Student Union and SHOT (Student Health Outreach Team) all took
part in the weeklong events. The weeklong event included the following same events as the first
annual event: (see description of these events in 2001 OKSOBERFEST activities)
- Monday October 22: GrubFest and Rally
- Wednesday October 24: How Visually Impaired Are You?
- Thursday October 25: A Day of Reflection
- Friday October 26: The Drinks Are On Us!
The following are the new additions to the annual OKSOBERFEST for 2002.
- Tuesday October 22: Wheel of Misfortune "Don´t Gamble with Your Life" (afternoon program): The committee purchased a roulette wheel and developed a question and answer type format to correspond with the roulette numbers. The students were encouraged to stop and play a round of roulette and possibly win a prize. These included the promotional items purchased for the outreach events. Each student was asked a question corresponding to their number and won a prize if they could answer the question correctly. The table was set up like a real roulette table and informational handouts were placed around the table. Along with the handouts, visuals were placed along the table to show the effects of taking the "Gamble" of drinking. These included a pickled liver, drunk driving statistics, college drinking statistics and injury statistics.
- Tuesday October 22: "See You at the Movies" (evening program): The committee wanted to sponsor a fun evening program that was alcohol-free. A free movie night was the concept the committee developed. All CSUB students were invited to attend the movie night and receive free non-alcoholic drinks and popcorn. Although the committee wanted to make it fun, the movie dealt with alcohol abuse and how it affects the family. The movie was "When a Man Loves a Woman".
- Thursday October 24: "Survivor: How Not To Become The Weakest Link" (evening program): The committee decided the interactive presentation would fit perfectly into the weeklong event. Housing was approached about hosting the presentation, but opening it up to all students. This allowed Housing to participate in alcohol awareness week activities and send a positive message to their residents. The only new addition to this presentation was the community prizes. The committee had contacted community businesses about donating prizes for the weeklong activities, many of which agreed. Some of the prizes included free bowling games, theatre tickets, sporting event tickets, t-shirts, and even dinners.
- Friday October 25: Get Your Groove On: Costume Dance (evening program): The committee wanted to end the week with a fun and alcohol-free event. The committee felt with alcohol awareness week falling so close to Halloween that we could link the two events. A costume dance was held and a DJ was provided to make it something students would want to attend. The committee paid for free non-alcoholic refreshments to be served during the dance and donated community prizes for the best costumes. The dance was well received by the students.
