About the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering

Welcome to the website of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering (NSME)
at California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB). CSUB is Your Public University in the southern

The faculty and staff in NSME pride themselves for their service to the CSUB student, the local community, and the advancement of science, technology, mathematics and engineering (STEM) and nursing. About one hundred faculty and thirty staff personnel are distributed into seven departments that offer fourteen baccalaureate degrees, three masters, and numerous concentrations. The school serves around 2000 full time equivalent students yearly, and claims 1700 majors, of which about 1400 are in STEM. Graduates of NSME typically enter the workforce as researchers, teachers, nurses, or industry employees, or advance to graduate programs in top research universities nationwide.

Curricula for pre-professional students in medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry are offered. Tracks and options within degrees are also available such as application software, biochemistry, forensics chemistry and many others. Our faculty members remain active in their disciplines through their research. Our students benefit from both practical classroom instruction, as well as hands-on laboratory work with our professors.
Mission
The School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering is dedicated to providing an
outstanding educational experience consistent with the University's Mission which is to be a
comprehensive public university committed to offering excellent undergraduate and graduate
programs that advance the intellectual and personal development of its students.
The objectives of the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering are to:
- Offer required coursework in science, mathematics, engineering, and nursing for students majoring in these disciplines.
- Offer required course work for students seeking a teaching credential in science and mathematics.
- Promote science, engineering, and health education for the purpose of improving the human condition.
- Foster scientific integrity in all professional endeavors.
- Prepare students for entry into the workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and healthcare services.
- Prepare students for admission to graduate programs in science, mathematics, engineering, and nursing.
- Prepare students for admission to professional programs in medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, and other health professions.
- Prepare students for leadership roles in the community.
