What is OpenStax College?

OpenStax is a non-profit organization that was developed out of an initiatve at Rice University. They offer 12 free college textbooks for introductory courses. These textbooks are peer-reviewed and are available for free online or in print for a small cost.

Where can you access these textbooks?

The textbooks are available for free online in various e-text formats, from their website: OR as a faculty member you can request a complimentary print copy. The Walter Stiern Library also has a display with print copies that can be previewed by faculty.

Why should you check out OpenStax textbooks?

  • Textbook costs continue to rise with more and more students unable to afford required textbooks for their classes. Campuses across the CSU are developing more cost effective solutions for faculty and students. Check out the CSU Affordable Learning $olutions initiative to learn more.
  • These textbooks are available in various e-text formats, including interactive iBook, PDF, web view, EPUB and Bookshare.
  • Faculty can re-tool the open textbooks to meet their course design and needs. Faculty are allowed to use or adapt these materials to their liking thanks to a Creative Commons Attribution license.
  • Why not? Did I mention they're FREE! Faculty are under no obligation to do anything other than check it out.
