Message from President Lynnette Zelezny

Excellence. Partnerships. Community. Those are the key themes on California State University, Bakersfield’s seal, and those are the themes we need to keep in mind as drivers of who we are and what we are aspiring to be. To help guide us as we consider what CSUB will look like in five years, we are now in the process of developing a new Strategic Plan.

We are so fortunate for the extraordinary work that was done under the leadership of President Emeritus Horace Mitchell in building the foundation to move CSUB forward during his 14 years here. Those efforts have brought distinction to the University in this region and beyond.

We are honoring the amazing achievements of the Strategic Plan that has served CSUB well for more than a decade. But now is the time for us to take steps to rise up and build a new Strategic Plan that will take us into the future. When I was appointed president of CSUB, I was given the charge to build a collective vision based on conversation and feedback from many constituents -- students, campus constituents, community constituents, alumni, corporate partners, and the region. The vision has to be dynamic and grow from ideas from our many stakeholders.

The new Strategic Plan is important for a number of reasons. First, it must be the framework for the work we do in allocating and aligning our resources, both human and financial resources. Second, it will be critical as we launch the University’s first comprehensive capital campaign. Third, we have a real gift at CSUB because we have land to develop, and the Strategic Plan will provide an important framework for how we develop our land. Fourth, the Strategic Plan will help us further connect CSUB with regional issues, particularly those related to water, agriculture, energy, transportation and food. Finally, the Strategic Plan process will help us think about the future of our academic programs.

I invite you to make sure that your ideas are heard by visiting csub.edu/feedback. You will be asked to address two questions: 1. What about CSUB makes you proud? 2. What are our opportunities?

I look forward to working with all of you as CSUB continues to rise.

Lynnette Zelezny, Ph.D., M.B.A.
