Subject Matter Competency Verification

California Education code requires that all candidates for a teaching credential demonstrate they are proficient in the subject matter of their intended credential.

California Assembly Bill 130 allows for completion of an academic major in the subject area of the credential being sought to satisfy Subject Matter Competency (SMC).

A baccalaureate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution of higher education may be considered for subject matter competency verification for a preliminary credential.
Degrees that qualify for consideration:

For Multiple Subject Credential: a degree major of Liberal Studies

For Single Subject Credential: a degree major in one of the subject named in Education Code section 44257(a); Agriculture, Art, Business, Dance, English, World Language, Health Science, Home Economics, Industrial and Technology Education, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Science, Social Science, or Theater.

For Education Specialist Credential: a degree major of Liberal Studies or one of the degree majors listed for Single Subject Credential.
