Title: Chaos Theory and Fractal Geometry

Explore the world of chaos by looking at discrete models that evolve with unpredictable behavior. Chaotic behavior is commonly associated with weather patterns and stock market volatility, but we consider models for interactions in insect populations, the spread of disease, for determining earthquake fault lines, and models for tumor growth. Students in this workshop will pick their own projects after learning the basic mathematics of chaos theory, and after performing literature searches of scientific papers. As part of the curriculum, all students will be introduced to fractal geometry and its relationship to chaos.
