Meet the Rock Stars!

Ok, so here's the skinny on how this club operates:

1. The body of students that we represent are the kings and queens.  Many of these people have paid dues to become "voting members", however, we answer to all psychology majors, regardless of membership.  Every committee answers to the voters and anyone can be removed from office by decision of the voting membership.  Every week, each committee makes proposals that the membership votes on and no committee may take action without student body support.  To become a voting member, all you have to do is pay dues ($10/quarter or $25/year), and all CSUB students are welcome to join our voting membership.

2. The directives of our voting membership are carried out by a series of committees.  No committee is more important or powerful than any other, rather, they work together accomplish the goals of the voting membership.  If you would like to become more involved in Psych Club, read the descriptions below and think about how you'd like to help.  Contact information for the people who can help you get started are listed in the directory below. Currently, the six Psych Club committees are:

  • Executive Committee: This group carries out the day-to-day business of the club.  They organize and conduct the meeting, handle the money and resources, and represent the voting membership to other organizations, the student body, our department, and the campus administration.  Unlike the other psych club committees, the five members of this committee are elected by majority vote and referred to as "officers".  The five officers of Psych Club are:
    • President: Conducts the weekly meetings but does not vote on issues.  Represents the club in meetings of student organizations.
    • Vice President: Assumes the role of president whenever the situation demands it.  Coordinates efforts within the executive committee and directs their own projects.
    • Treasurer: Manages club finances, working directly with Campus Accounting, The Office of Student Involvement, The Psychology Department, and our donors
    • Secretary: Keeps records of all club activities. Prepares agendas, minutes, and club materials.  This is the most demanding of all offices, given how active our members are.
    • Public Relations Officer: Responsible for recruitment.  Organizes and conducts classroom presentations and club presentations at club fairs and campus events.  Responsible for club logo and image, preparing all advertising materials.
  • Volunteering Committee: Conducts and organizes the community service efforts of the club in response to the will of the voting membership.
    • Chairperson: Locates volunteering opportunities within the community and presents them to the club membership for voting approval. Also, directs the efforts of committee members while carrying out future directives of the committee.
    • Co-Chairperson: Coordinates with the chairperson to carry out future directives approved by club members and assumes the role of chairperson as deemed necessary.
    • Committee Advisor: Advises and assists the chairperson in the efforts of locating volunteering opportunities and carrying out the future directives of the committee.
    • Campus Beautification Coordinator: Assists with community service efforts and is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the Psychology Club’s adopted CSUB campus area through the CSUB Adopt-An-Area Program.
  • Fundraising Committee: This committee is responsible for procuring donations and managing our various fundraising projects.  The bulk of our funds go towards the maintenance of the Psychology Computer Lab, which costs us over $1,000 per year.
  • Social Media Outreach Committee: Social Media Outreach includes everything we do online.  Whereas the Public Relations Officer (Executive Committee) is the face of our group, Social Media Outreach is the voice.  This committee oversees this Web Site, our Facebook page, twitter account, and all other electronic forms of communication other than email.
  • Newsletter Management Committee: The Psychology Club newsletter, Get Psyched!, is a student collaboration of messages and ideas. It is distributed at least once a quarter, primarily but not specifically, to students of the Psychology major. It is a bullhorn to the student body, through which we exercise our right to free speech. Everyone is encouraged to write for the newsletter (both students and alumni). The articles published can be related to Psychology, CSUB, or the student population at large. The Newsletter Management Committee concentrates on advertising the space in our newsletter, on procuring newsletter articles, and on formatting and printing the final draft of the newsletter. Some duties include: formulating interesting topics to assign to members, finding individuals who have something important to say, and establishing/sticking to a deadline. Please consider joining the Newsletter Management Committee if you are organized, are proficient in writing, or are interested in building these skills.
  • Inter-Organizational Outreach Committee: Collaborates with other campus clubs and organizations, keeps members updated on different events around campus, acts as liaison between faculty and psychology club members.  The main focus of this committee is to bridge the gap between Psych Club and our sister organization, Psi Chi - club liaisons in both organizations have the responsibility of keeping all of us well-connected.
