CSUB’s Department of Teacher Education and Kegley Institute of Ethics Announce Summer Institute for Local Teachers

The Kegley Institute of Ethics and CSUB Department of Teacher Education at California State University, Bakersfield are collaborating to host the SEEDE (Social-Emotional, Ethics, and Democratic Education) Summer Institute for local K-6 educators. The SEEDE Institute (July 22-24 and 26, 2019) will feature interactive and practice-based sessions for K-6 educators on topics in ethics education, social-emotional learning, and democratic pedagogy.

Participating teachers will receive a $1,000 stipend and, at the conclusion of the Institute, will present on their plans to introduce ethics, SEL, and democratic pedagogy to a group of education stakeholders at the SEEDE Summit (July 26). In addition, at the conclusion of the Institute, participating teachers will become “SEEDE Ambassadors.” In this role, teachers will commit to incorporating ethics, SEL, and democratic pedagogy in their classrooms and schools. Follow up consultation sessions will be scheduled with Ambassadors to support their work in the following school year. As a result, this Institute will produce a committed community and network of structured support for teachers to increase ethics, SEL, and democratic pedagogy in Bakersfield-region schools.

Drs. Michael D. Burroughs (Kegley Institute of Ethics) and Brittney Beck (CSUB Department of Teacher Education) are co-directing the SEEDE Institute.

Describing the SEEDE Institute, Dr. Beck noted, “Our shared vision is for Kern County to be a national model of excellence in cultivating students who are empathetic and informed citizens, who are able to think through the complex problems of our community, and who are able to engage in deliberative dialogue with diverse viewpoints in order to collaboratively solve those problems.”
