CSUB Hosts the 2nd Annual ‘A Day in the Life of a Nurse’ Event

California Nursing Students Association (CNSA) and Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) at California State University, Bakersfield will host the 2nd-Annual “A Day in the Life of a Nurse” event in honor of National Nurses Week on April 25, 2019 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Doré Theatre.

Because of privacy laws, nurses rarely are able to discuss details about their work, so National Nurses Week is a welcome opportunity for caregivers to offer a glimpse into their world.

“So many people share parts of their work day on social media, but nursing has this amazing career that we cannot do that because of confidentiality laws. This means that so many people really have no idea what a nurse does on a daily basis, and our hope is that this event can provide some of that information. Nursing is a science that brings together chemistry, math, microbiology, nutrition, and so many other specialties that we then apply to help care for patients and offer them a healing touch,” said Department of Nursing Assistant Professor Krystal Ball.

In 2015, the ABC television talk show “The View” received a lot of attention and backlash that stemmed from common misconceptions about the nursing profession. The talk show played a video of Kelley Johnson, recent winner of Miss Colorado, wearing a nursing uniform for the talent portion of the pageant as she gave a monologue about her profession as a nurse.

After watching the clip, co-host Joy Behar commented, “Why does she have a doctor’s stethoscope on?” This shed light on the fact that although there are currently 4 million nurses in the U.S. today, compared to 1.1 million doctors, there is still a misunderstanding about the professional role of a nurse.

Through the use of short videos, pictures, monologues and skits, nursing students and faculty will give a better understanding of what a day in the life of a nurse looks like.

Last year this event drew 222 attendees, including students K-12, pre-nursing students, current CSUB nursing students, nurses, and community members. Some of the guests even signed up to be potential donors for the “Delete Blood Cancer” drive. There will also be fundraising opportunities, such as donation drawings, in order to help send CSUB nursing students to the CNSA State Convention and the National Student Nurses’ Association Convention next year.

“A Day in the Life of a Nurse” is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Free parking will be available in lots B and C. For more information, contact Krystal Ball at 661-654- 3107 or kball1@csub.edu.
