CSUB Philosophy and Religious Studies Department and Kegley Institute of Ethics to Host Dr. Myisha Cherry

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Kegley Institute of Ethics at California State University, Bakersfield are excited to announce that Dr. Myisha Cherry will be a featured speaker in the 2019 Philosophy and Religious Studies Colloquia Series on April 5 at noon. In the Humanities Office Complex, Room 1109.

“Dr. Cherry is a leading figure in publicly engaged philosophy, an outstanding speaker, podcast host and writer, all with the aim of eliciting important conversations on race, emotions and ethical life,” said lead organizer for this event, and director of the Kegley Institute of Ethics.

Dr. Cherry is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at UC Riverside and, also a public intellectual. She founded and hosts “The UnMute Podcast,” which includes cutting-edge interviews with leading philosophers on pressing contemporary issues, and is the author of “Unmuted: Conversations on Prejudice, Oppression, and Social Justice” (Oxford University Press, 2019). Dr. Cherry’s visit to CSUB is part of her book tour for “Unmuted,” which has brought her to cities all over the United States.

In addition to her academic work, Cherry has written publicly about political emotions, race and justice for the Los Angeles Times, Salon, New Philosopher and the Huffington Post. She has contributed essays to three volumes of Open Court’s Philosophy and Pop Culture Series, exploring themes such as manipulation, white privilege and community and police relations.
