KIE Hosts Dr. Angela Davis for 33rd Charles W. Kegley Memorial Lecture

The Kegley Institute of Ethics at California State University, Bakersfield, is excited to announce that Dr. Angela Davis will deliver the 33rd Annual Charles W. Kegley Memorial Lecture at 6 p.m. April 11 at the CSUB Dore Theatre. Davis’ lecture is titled “Education or Incarceration?: Activism and the Prison-Industrial Complex.” This event is free and open to the public, thanks to the sponsorship of the Kegley Family, Kaiser Permanente and Adventist Health Bakersfield, Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, and Valley Public Radio. The event can be live-streamed here:

Through her activism and scholarship, Angela Davis has been deeply involved in our nation’s quest for social justice. Her work as an educator – both at the university level and in the larger public sphere – emphasizes the importance of building communities of struggle for economic, racial, and gender justice.

Davis is the author of nine books and has lectured throughout the United States as well as in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and South America. In recent years, a persistent theme of her work has been the range of social problems associated with incarceration and the generalized criminalization of those communities that are most affected by poverty and racial discrimination. She draws upon her own experiences in the early 1970s as a person who spent 18 months in jail and on trial, after being placed on the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted List.”

Like many other educators, Professor Davis is especially concerned with the general tendency to devote more resources and attention to the prison system than to educational institutions. Having helped to popularize the notion of a “prison industrial complex,” she now urges her audiences to think seriously about the future possibility of a world without prisons and to help forge a 21st century abolitionist movement.

Free parking is available for this event in Lots A, B, C, and J on the CSUB Campus (after 5:30 p.m.). For additional information, please call KIE at 661-654-6263 or email at
