CSU Bakersfield to Host First-Generation Celebration

California State University, Bakersfield will host a First-Generation College Celebration event as part of the national movement to celebrate first-generation students, faculty, and staff on Wednesday, Nov. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the CSUB Student Union Patio.

“As a First Generation student myself I understand the type of support and guidance students need to succeed,” said Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Jenny Zorn. “It is important for them to understand they have worked hard to get this far in their academic careers. They deserve to be at CSUB. They have earned the right to this opportunity to further their education and reach their goals.”

The CSUB First-Generation celebration will encourage and support students who are first in their family to attend college. Students will have the opportunity to meet first-generation campus leaders and peers, learn more about being a first-generation college student, and participate in a social media campaign of "Why I'm First.”

On November 8, college campuses around the nation are asked to hold rallies, panel discussions, listening sessions, celebrations, and more in recognition of their first-generation students. Institutions can use #CelebrateFirstGen to share their events and join in conversations with colleagues and students.

This date marks the 53rd anniversary of the signing of the 1965 Higher Education Act (HEA), which has helped millions of poor students become the first members of their families to earn college degrees.

“A quality education is a powerful tool that can positively change lives and generations,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Thomas Wallace.
