CSUB Celebrates Pride Week with Full Schedule of Events

California State University, Bakersfield is committed to being an inclusive campus, accepting of everyone, no matter their race, gender, ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation. During the week of Monday, Oct. 8, through Friday, Oct. 13, CSUB will celebrate the LGBTQ+ community with Pride Week, hosted by LGBTQ+ Pride faculty and staff affinity group, student club, the LGBTQ+ Network and Campus Programming.

Pride Week will foster a continued welcoming and respectful campus community for LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff through various activities and events.

The LGBTQ+ Kickoff and Resource Fair will start festivities on Monday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Red Brick Road, and a kickoff kickball game will be held at 5 p.m. at the SRC Intramural Field.

The festivities will continue on Wednesday, Oct. 10, with the 10th Annual Ally Rally from 6-8 p.m. Participants will meet at the CSUB flagpoles at 5:30 p.m. for a Rally walk to the event. The rally was organized in 2009 by Dr. Anne Duran in the Psychology Department after receiving an anonymous note on her door eliciting hate toward the LGBTQ community. It motivated Duran to continue to open a dialogue about LGBTQ issues and what it means to be an ally for the community.

“This is an opportunity for all individuals to participate in an open dialogue regardless of their individual position on LGBTQ issues,” Dr. Duran said. “This event is a safe space, and all are welcome to attend. It is important for events like this to show students, faculty and staff and community that CSUB is a welcoming environment.”

Expression Night will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Stockdale Room to celebrate National Coming Out Day. This will give students a chance to share their story and express themselves through art, spoken word, dance or any other artistic talent you’d like. If interested, please sign up at the Campus Programming Office or email

Movie Night will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12, in Alumni Park. Participants should bring blankets and chairs for a showing of “The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The week will conclude with the Pride Volleyball game against Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. in Icardo Center on Saturday, Oct. 13. Coach Giovanna Melo started this event to create an awareness of LGBTQ issues in athletics and to emphasize that all are welcome at their games.
