CSU Bakersfield Celebrates 3rd Annual Sustainability Month

For the third straight year, California State University, Bakersfield will celebrate Sustainability Month in October with a number of activities across campus.

"At CSU Bakersfield, we celebrate and advance environmental sustainability through education, through awareness, and through discussion,” said President Lynnette Zelezny. "We are fortunate to have an engaged student body that challenges us to seek more responsible products, treat our plants resources with care, contribute to healthy air in the Valley, and preserve our water resources.”

Sustainability Month started on Monday, Oct. 1, with an official kickoff at the Student Union Patio. President Lynnette Zelezny and Associate Vice President for Facilities Management John Ramirez provided brief remarks, and various organizations, both on and off campus, provided information on sustainability resources and campaigns. The Thirst Project, Commute Kern, Blue Sky Partners, Project Clean Air, the CSUB Student Recreation Center were among the participants.

Other highlights of the month include:

  • An Edible Garden planting event from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 4, which included the first planting of a fruit tree at the CSUB Edible Garden.

  • From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 20, CSUB will partner with Alianza Recycling for an electronic waste drive at the "Christmas Tree Drop-Off" area on Camino Media and Southwest Drive. Many electronic items that cannot be disposed at landfills will be accepted at the drive. It is open to the community.

  • In conjunction with Sustainability Month activities, the Multicultural Alliance and Gender Equity Resource Center will be collecting gently used and new professional clothing from Oct. 1-19. The clothing will be available for CSUB students to keep and use at their interviews, presentations, and meetings.

A Movie Night showing the documentary, AWAKE: A Dream from Standing Rock, which tells the story of the resistance led by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to the Dakota Access Pipeline through their land, will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Oct. 25 at the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
