CSU Bakersfield Excels with Student Research Scholars Program

The Office of Grants, Research and Sponsored Programs (GRaSP) at California State University, Bakersfield has announced the 2018-19 Student Research Scholars (SRS) Program winners.

The Student Research Scholars Program supports students with a $2,000 stipend to conduct projects involving research, scholarships, and/or creative activity. Funding is provided by The President’s Associates, a group of community leaders established in 1970 dedicated to supporting the success of California State University, Bakersfield.

“The opportunity for our undergraduate and graduate students to engage in meaningful research with facility is a real pride point for CSUB,” said President Lynnette Zelezny. “Our students, our University, and our region all benefit from the President’s Associate’s generous support of this program.”

Thank you so much to the Presidents Associates for opening research opportunities for students,” said Anna Poon, a computer science student. “The funds from my scholarship will allow me to expand my network and disseminate my research findings in emotion recognition using machine learning this year.”

Her faculty mentor, Dr. Alberto Cruz added, “This program is a critical part of Anna's preparation for graduate school, providing a valuable experience in articulating and demonstrating her work to others.”

Over the course of the 2018-19 academic school year, 25 students and their faculty mentors will research their proposed project of study. Students can expect to receive research training and mentorship in working with their faculty mentors. Awarded students represent a variety of departments and programs across the University. The program will culminate with each student making an oral presentation of their research at the annual CSUB Student Research Competition in Spring 2019.
