CSUB and JCPenney Partner for First Suit Up Event

Students and first-year graduates are often encouraged to attend workshops focusing on professional development skills such as resume writing and interviewing techniques. However, many students don’t often give thought to their wardrobe until the last minute, and even then, are unsure what to wear to career fair or job interview.

To address this issue, California State University, Bakersfield has partnered with the local JCPenney at the Valley Plaza Mall for the first Suit Up event from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14, to help students shop for business professional attire at an affordable price.

“Suit Up is a wonderful event that has not been tried at CSUB in recent memory. We have data that illustrates the need for CSUB students to further develop their important soft skills,” said Dr. James Drnek, associate vice president for student affairs. “The Suit Up event is right on point, teaching students the importance of professional clothing that they would wear to a job interview and to the first and ensuing days at work.  That is critical and often overlooked.”

JCPenney will close its doors to the public early, reopening just for CSUB students and first-year alumni for a special shopping event for career wear with exclusive offers including an additional 40% off select apparel. Faculty and staff volunteers will also have these offers available to them.

“Faculty, staff and community members with experience in the area of clothing and attire will help CSUB students grow, develop and reach career fulfillment, following graduation,” said Drnek.
